We've got one from the 60's, one from the 80's, two from the 90's, and the newest one ouside is the first half of the 00's.0

I'm taking my 20 year old Mini for an MOT tomorrow, so someone might see me on the road in an old car.
ML.
Just done that as well. Fails on some of the ball joints, track rod ends, steering gaiters driveshaft gaiters, and front discs.
I replaced all of them for less than £60 and it took me a day on the drive.
Cheap motoring for another year.0 -
A friend with a BMW had flat-spots in acceleration, and took it back to the dealers, who couldn't help. BMW mechanics connected the car, and diagnostics (twice) showed everything fine....He was now out a bit of money....
A chance meeting with a mechanic in a run-down garage diagnosed a dirty o2 sensor in seconds, and free of charge.0 -
I have just started to look for a car for my g/f, her 10 y/o Ka probably won't pass its MOT this time round. The scrappage scheme has certainly had a massive effect on the amount of sub £1000 cars on the market.
Autotrader used to be full of used vehicles at the lower end of the market and now has very few.
The auctions look like the best place still but very few of these are over 10 years old. As long as it comes in under budget we'll have as new as we can get though.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep
& Choo Choo for trains!!0 -
My car is 13 years old and I'm about to spend nearly a grand getting the front end replaced and resprayed.
Not everyone chucks their cars away.0 -
One of mine is 48 years old and it's exhausted less CO2 over it's lifetime than is produced during the manufacture of a newer "green" car.0

I drive a 12 year car which has just notched up 90k and runs fine, yes I would like a newer car but can't justify the spend when mine runs so well.
One day I will be buying a 40 to 50 year old car when I have enough money to get my Plymouth Roadrunner or Dodge Charger ;o)))))0 -

contrary to that... i have a Honda Accord a few years ago that had problems idling.
Not wanting to incur honda main dealer pricing i took it to an indy garage who stripped down the carbs (it was old!) cleaned and rebuilt... problem persisted (stupidly i paid him cause i was young and didn't know better)
Took it to another indy who could not get it right either - another few quid wasted.
So i gave in and went to my local honda dealer... technician came out to the car park. listened to it trying to idle a couple of times. Pulled out a screwdriver from his top pocket and tweaked a couple of screws here and there on the carbs... BINGO. didn't charge me a penny. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
This sounds daft I bought a brand new car recently to replace my old Corsa which suffered a head gasket failure. One of the reasons is I thought my financial situation will just get worse so I will cheer myself up with a new car.
I've seen loads of 10 regs on the roads and I think this one of the major reasons behind it.0
