renting rooms to friends

hi there
We are a family of four with extra space. We know a couple who are waiting to get into their new house and have a gap of around six weeks where they have no accommodation.
Before discussing it with them, I would be interested in people's personal experience of renting to someone you know. Also, what is a reasonable monthly rent to charge someone living in your house? We would be giving them exclusive use of a bedroom and a separate small lounge area to avoid tv/computer disputes.
your help and advice is much appreicated, as I understand this could be a minefield. It may be easiest to offer the space rent free as I am not sure about mixing friendship and money.
with warmest wishes
