Laminate Flooring in the bathroom

Can I fit Laminate Flooring in my bathroom?

I was going to fit ceramic bathroom room floor tiles, but I want access to my bath panel and knowing my luck if I fit proper tiles something would happen and I would have to take the tiles up for access to the pipes under the floor and to get to the bath panel.

Is there any laminate about for bathrooms. If so any recommendations???

  • Hi

We have just fitted some floormaster slate effect laminate tiles that come in packs containing about 1.73sqm. These a specifically designed for splash areas such as the bathroom and kitchen. I have been told that to be certain about their durability that you should still glue the joints despite them the pack stating that they use a click system with no glue required.

I dont like the idea that once a floor is down you cant lift it back up for the same reason that you have mentioned therefore i took the risj and did not use any glue.

I bought an extra pack just in case it ever needed to be lifted up and got damaged in the process because once its down it locks into place and needs to be unclicked carefully, but in terms of appearance they look great. I got mine from B and Q in the sale @ £15 per pack reduced from £30pp.

You will need underlay but in general they are relatively easy to fit.

I have tiled walls no skirting. What should I do round the edge of the bathroom once the laminate is fitted.

you can buy small strips of edging that match the laminate flooring and you just glue that around the egde of the wall to cover the expansion gap

to waterproof the joints between laminate boards you don't need to glue them. you can get waterproof sealant which you put in between each board but is fully flexible and you can peel it off the boards if you want to take then up and re-lay them.

hubby had to do this about 8 times until the floor was laid to my standards lol. and they're completely waterproof.

the previous owners laid splashproof laminate in the kitchen and didn't bother to seal the joints. They are now all swelling along each joint near the sink and washing machine and look awful so we'll have to replace the whole lot soon

You can really fit any type of laminate in bathrooms, and dont necessarily have to find an aqua loc type. aqua loc tend to be quite expensive, and the job can be done simply by making sure the joints are waterproofed either by using clicseal as described above which is like a silicon compound that you put between joints, dry and peel off excess or by usinig glue/pva between joints. Obviously if you are thinking you need to get under floor, clicseal is way to go. when i say any type of laminate I would recommend types such as quickstep though and not some 'cheap' B&Q/homebase one that would not stand up to daily wear. The only benefit of aqua loc is its guarantees fitment in wet areas. I have quickstep in my bathroom, pva between joints as because the room is small i figuredi f i ever needed to replace then it was only a couple of packs again.......this has now been down approx 6 years, looks as good now as the first day and the two kids have merrily splashed away!

    Hi

I have just layed a top quality vinyl that looks like laminate, and it looks so much like a laminate floor it fooled my dad when he came round.

    Benefits of vinyl:
totally water proof, cushioned slightly, anti-slip (get this on the more expensive vinyls), a feeling of warmth.

    Downsides to laminate:
can warp when wetted especially if water penetrates the joints, harder to fit, more expensive to fit, maybe slippy under foot, colder to touch and harder if you slip and fall.

    Hi

We had carpet in there before, it was so easy to take up the carpet and use this as a template for the vinyl flooring. I finished the job with the beading you use for edging laminate floor, looks spot on.
