Age 60 and Signing on

My husband was 60 on 8th March 2010, and lost his job in April. He is signing on at the Job Centre, but since he gets a small pension of just over £5000 a year, and I also get a pension of just over £8000 a year (I'm 62), he doesn't get any benefit, except a reduction in council tax.

It costs him money to travel three miles to the job centre, and I can't see the point in him signing on, since they are not paying him anything.

Does he really need to sign on?

He doesn't need to sign on if he doesn't want to.

  • He doesn't really want to sign on, since he is far too highly qualified to be able to get any jobs which they may have, which are very few in any case, and very low in callibre.

Would he still get National Insurance Credits? This is his only concern.

someone will need to correct me on this probably, but i think he would get autocredits anyway, and therefore not need to sign
You can't beat an egg.........................NO WAIT!
  • Thanks for your replies.

I didn't mean my post to sound so 'superior', sorry :(. It's just that he was a senior software engineer in the Defence Industry, and with the cutbacks, there is no longer any work in his field. The problem is, he was on contract, so his only pension was from work done years ago with the BBC.

He's tried for lesser jobs, even van driving, and shelf stacking, but is rejected without interview when they see his age and even a very watered down CV!

yes, he will get NI credits from his 60th birthday so there's no real need for him to sign on at all.

He needs to try and get some work in the black economy.

sounds like you have both done your bit for HMRC already.
    Someone elses turn ?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I wasn't aware that under the current regime you were actually entitled to anything for having done your bit for HRMC.

I though benefits were predicated on the ownership of a Nigerian or Polish passport?

There are jobs out there! Has he tried van driving or shelf stacking?!

    /sarcasm

I am half your husband's age and, despite 10 years of working in finance and IT, I can't even get an interview for Tesco (where I would be quite happy working... I worked there all through uni). :(
  • Job centre should have advised him to go for Pension Credits being as he is 60

If you don't want to work, you have to work to earn enough money so that you won't have to work ;)
