  • I could never be as good as my mum was. I was born quite late in the 60's, but Dad had been badly injured in the war. He worked when he could, but spent a lot of time off sick. Benefits were not like they are now and we were extremely poor.....certainly by today's standards. We lived of course in council housing. On a Sunday we had a roast joint, then the rest would be minced and we'd have mince one day, cottage pie the next, cornish pasties the next etc etc, then the next week would follow the same pattern. We grew all our own veg. I don't like mince now at all!!!! When the sheets on the bed wore out, Mum would cut them up the middle, turn sides to middle and sew them up.

Strangely, I never felt deprived not once....Mum stayed at home because there was me and my Dad to look after....she was always taking me on walks which are free and gave me loads of time. In my 20's when I started earning I rebelled a bit - didn't get in debt but certainly spent all my salary. Now I've calmed down and learnt the value of saving and the freedom it can give you.
