Hi All
I thought my internet connection had fallen over after installing an update today, however, after spending quite some time on the phone to Orange's broadband team, they seem to think that it is a hardware issue (I am writing this on another laptop on the same broadband connection, so guess they are correct
).
I have already tried a restore point from yesterday in case anyone suggests it and would appreciate any advice / guidance on what / where to look at potential hardware issues.
Apparently I am already connected to the Livebox (Orange's modem / router) although I cannot connect - I seem to remember that it stated that IPv4 & IPv6 (think they are correct) weren't connected if that means antthing to anyone.
Thanks in advance.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your setup, please?
Wired connection or wireless?
Which operating system?
In the bottom right hand corner on the toolbar there is a connectivity icon. Double click and follow the link to the Network and sharing centre.
Once there, what do you get?0 -

Apologies' john
It is a wireless connection and I am using Vista as the operating system.
Network & sharing centre link shows an image of the laptop and the internet and between them is a ' X ' and the words 'not connected' are also visible slightly lower down the page.
Various options are visible on the left and I also have the option to 'connect to a network'.
Thanks

Go to accessories from the start button, right click command prompt and run it as administrator.
Once the black window opens up type without the quotes
"ipconfig /release"
then once thats done type
"ipconfig /renew"
once that is done try
"ping www.google.com"
If it then give 4 lines of text with timings it should be ok.
No real guarantee here but it can't do any harm. I skipped Vista so not fully sure where the command prompt is these days.New PV club member. 3.99kW system. Solar Edge with 14 x 285W JA Solar panels. 55° West from south and 35° pitch.0 -

Hi Oneday
on typing both the ipconfig/renew & release I received a message stating "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation"
The ping request could not find host ww.google.com
Thanks

You have been getting help from people who know more about vista than i do (Still using Xp) but your next step is probably a TCP/IP stack repair
For Vista -
1) Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
3) Type netsh winsock reset in command prompt and hit ENTER button.
4) Type netsh int ip reset reset.log in command prompt and hit ENTER button.
5) Reboot
hopefully you will get a 'successfully reset' message each time. after the reboot open the CMD prompt again and try the ipconfig /release command againand see if you get a better resultthis time.0 -

Hi,
Personally I'd check the following things :-
Is there a physical wireless switch on your laptop? Is it firmly in the 'On' position?
Then go to Start (Well, the Windows Orb button in Vista) > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click on the icon that says Wireless Network Connection > Click 'Repair'
What is the outcome if this? Does it give an error message i.e Couldn't refresh IP address or does it say 'Connected' under the Wireless Network Connection icon?
Just a few other questions, does your internet have a wireless key on it? i.e have you set up a password on it? Does your router name appear when you go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click on 'Wireless Network Connection' icon > View Available Wireless Networks.
Does it appear in the list (click refresh a few times if the list is blank) If so, what is the signal strength like? (Number of green bars next to the Network name.
To be honest, if you installed an update before this happened then it's probably thrown some settings out. This used to happen with XP and SP2. but as it's Vista, there could be a whole number of issues! Any idea what update you installed?0 -

Sorry Stinky Daddy, I did warn you that I am only really familiar with XP. As you mentioned in your first post, Vista uses IVPv4 and 6 rather than IP, so I think my post should have read --
FOR Vista-
1) Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
3) Type netsh winsock reset in command prompt and hit ENTER button.
4) Type netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log in command prompt and hit ENTER button.
5) Type netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log in command prompt and hit ENTER button.
6) Reboot and try the ipconfig /release command again.0
