I've driven a few astra, and parents had the older model. On the plus side it was highly reliable, decent running costs. On the minus, well its an astra.
I don't do boring cars so what about a fiat 500 , honda jazz, suzuki swift?
You said you don't do boring cars but you recommend a Honda Jazz?. Yes it's a good car no argument there, it's hardly exciting though is it?0 -
Really???
Vauxhall - reliable??
Ford - nice ride??
Volkswagen - hit and miss??
Not sure where you've heard all of that, but it's all a bit upside down if you ask me. Vauxhall have poor build quality, and worse reliablilty. Ford is the worst car I've ever driven. VW/Skoda will give infinately more reliablilty and firmer ride. Not only that but your £6k will be still worth near that if/when you sell, where the Ford/Vauxhall will be scrap value in 5 years!
you really live the VAG brand are you so enthusiastic about reliability of that truly awful Fox thing VW sell????
no car is without its faults VW included but VW will be alot more expensive to put right if and when it does go wrong.
my mom has got a 57 plate polo she has had from new and yes it is a nice enough car but not anything amazingly special like you seem to think VW are.
vauxhall have the reputation of being poor cars from a few years back when they were however these days they are not a bad car.0 -
These are nice if you can run to one but the TS2 spec (which is significantly better than the TS) may be out of your price range.

I'm thinking http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201027362994589/sort/priceasc/usedcars/body-type/hatchback/engine-size-cars/1-4l_to_1-6l/price-from/2000/price-to/7000/maximum-age/up_to_3_years_old/transmission/manual/maximum-mileage/up_to_40000_miles/model/fiesta/make/ford/radius/10/page/1/postcode/ub32fg?logcode=p looks very nice. I don't want anything too fancy like some have posted, just a fairly modern professional looking car that drives well and is nice on the wallet.
The 3dr version of the Fiesta looks much more sporty and generally looks great, if a little too small. The only thing I hate is the back windows look tiny. Haven't had a chance to sit in the back or even drive one yet, so maybe it would feel more spacious inside but looks a little cramped.
Thinking the 5dr version would be better, then again its mainly gonna be me in the car
I really feel my hearts sold on the Fiesta Zetec, at least in terms of outside look and interior so far, will hopefully find out how it drives tomorrow0 -

What reliability issues have the Fox's got? I have genuinely not seen a Fox in the workshop for anything but a service since they have been on the forecourts!?
As you rightly said, no car is without it's faults, but VW have by far the best reliablility, customer care and warranty procedures out of the brands I've worked for. With short turn around times including next day delivery of warranty parts from Germany if required. Like for like courtesy cars if your vehicle is under warranty, not just a bottom of the range Fox et al, and a genuine desire to serve the customer and keep them happy...
The fallacy about VW prices is being shattered with a more aggressive set of pricing structures for servicing, and even beating the likes of Halfrauds prices on filters if you want to do the work yourself. A service for £99? Cambelt (inc tensioners/rollers etc) fitted for £170? It's the way dealers have had to go in order to get the business back from the fred-in-the-sheds without compromising on the quality or service, as you will still get a 2year parts and labour warranty with all parts and work carried out at VW, and that's covered nationwide, not only if you take it back to the place you had it done.
I really cannot see why there is such a distain for the dealer? It's a very dated stereotype.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0 -

Don't remind me of customer service of VW. My mum owns a Golf and was in tears when she came back from a VW service centre. The customer service guy was probably the rudest man I've ever met.0 -
I believe in the VAG reputation and quality if that's what you mean? I have worked for the aftermarket side of the trade, and within the dealer arena - Renault/Nissan/Rover/Peugeot/Skoda in various guises, with VW standing head and shoulders above them all for reliability, customer service & overall quality. It's my educated opinion having worked in the trade for 16years, and I'm entitled to it

i am not so sure about the customer service being head and shoulders above the rest,my moms nearly 3 year old polo has done 6000 miles and is on long life servicing VW dealer wanted in excess of £200 to do a service at 12 months old when it had around 3.5k miles on clock it was not even due a service.they insisted it was and stated warranty would be void if it was not serviced.after speaking with VW HQ it was agreed service was not due until 2 years old based on the low mileage needless to say it did not go to VW but was instead done at a local specialist using VW parts and spec so as such keeping warranty intact all done for £110.
as for the fox a woman at work bought one and had nothing but problems ranging from engine hesitation to general poor build quality, and to be fair it is no where near the quality the VW group seem to think they are, reminds me of a pimped up city rover.0 -

Sorry to hear that although you can get rude people in other non VW branded service centres.0 -
I think the VW group's reliability reputation was somewhat tarnished by a few turds that they put out in the late 90s / early 00s era. eg. the Mk4 Golf (which includes probably the worst GTI Golf ever), Mk1 Audi TT and so on.
The one I'll remember VW for is my mum's old Polo, it had that anti theft system that seals up the locks if someone tries to tamper with them, and that activated while she was driving down a 70mph dual carriageway. When she got to work (Birkenhead, noted for it's car crime) she couldn't lock her car.
The VW dealer she got it from was rude and obnoxious refused to fix it insisting that someone must have tried to break in and didn't take very kindly to my mum asking, "who do you think tried to break in? Linford Christie?", had to threaten them with trading standards to get anything done.0
