Anyone recommend a half decent printer

Could anyone recommend a half decent printer please.
I currently have a Lexmark 5000 something or another that has 1 cart for black and 1 cart for colour which is great, however its now almost £27 per cartridge.
Is there a decent printer / scanner out there around £40-£60 that doesn't have extortonate ink carts? but still does a good job.
Thanks everyone

Would help if you said what you mainly want to print.
    Text only-mono laser printer.
Text and colour graphics-4 col inkjet.
    Photos-inkjet photo printer, 5 or 6 colour.
If getting a colour inkjet go for one with separate colour cartidges so you don't waste the other colours. The cheaper the printer, the more expensive the ink.
Personally I would always buy a Canon, with HP as second choice. Epson and Brother absolutely not.
    Samsung do good personal lasers.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Sorry yeah its just for average everyday home use i.e a word doc here and there the odd photo etc

i would also second a Canon, might not be the cheapest but have never had a problem with quality, just remember as pointed out above, general rule of thumb, the cheaper a printer is to buy the more expensive the ink will be
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • Thanks for that

    Canon
in the 4000 series, the cost to ink ratio drops dramatically.

If you are printing Photos, the Kodak ink is generic and both colour and Black inks are £14 each

The printer costs a little more, but saves a ton if printing full colour

It'll do black ink prints cheap too :D
  • Like the sound of that, thanks

Rather than buy a new printer have you considered using cheaper cartridges? I recently bought a black cartridge for my HP printer for £6 rather than nearly £30 for the branded item. No problems so far. I used inkxpressdirect.com - very good service and cheap p&p!

My HP PhotoSmart 3210 has given me 3 years of trouble-free service, and I have no probs with non-HP carts.

My son has a Canon MP620, and getting the inks is an absolute nightmare. Apart from that, the print quality is as good as the photolabs.

As for the Kodak, my nephew has one. Even in best quality mode the blacks are more like dark grey.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I have an MP620 and I get my compatible carts (chipped) from 'Inkcredible'. On their special offers (I got 4 sets, that's 20 carts, for £30) or you can get them for around £2 each. You don't have to change them all at the same time either. They do work, and I couldn't see any difference in the colour between them and Canon carts.

    I would recommend a HP Photosmart all-in-one.

My first printer was a Lexmark, which I replaced a couple of years later with an Epson, as it was cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace both cartridges.

I wasn't overly happy with the Epson, as I kept getting errors, and it didn't work properly after a few years. I am now happily using a HP Photosmart all-in-one which is excellent. The ink cartridges seem to last a very long time.
