I am not sure what you mean here Foggytown.
If you stop a DD they will create a new one.
If you cancel a credit card they will charge it anyway.
If none of that works, they will sell on the debt to some company who almost certinly WILL use dodgy pracitce - like calling you 10 times a day.
I'm not saying these people act professionally or legally, but I am saying that's whay they do.

lisyloo, clearly you either work for an insurance company or you have a very sad life. For some reason you are completely missing the point people are making here ........ WE DO NOT WANT AUTOMATIC RENEWAL....... WE DID NOT ASK FOR AUTOMATIC RENEWAL ............ MANY COMPANIES NOW ONLY ACCEPT DEBIT/CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS TO ENSURE THEY GET YOU DETAILS ................THEY THEN INSTIGATE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL DESPITE ANYTHING YOU SAY TO THE CONTRARY....... AND FINALLY WHY SHOULD THE CLIENT BE PUT IN A POSITION TO HAVE TO 'DO SOMETHING' TO CANCEL SOMETHING THEY DO NOT WANT. If you really think that insurers 'make clear' their intension you need to open your eyes.

The really sad thing is that this practice WILL lead to people simply cancelling their debit/credit card. If it helps anyone my solution was a simple one, I now have a basic debit card account, completely unrelated to any other account or bank I deal with at present (to avoid internal cross money movements) I completely refused any overdraft facility to avoid monies being claimed when the account is empty, and I only put money into the account a few days before anything that is due that I agree with. If there is no money in the account then they dont get and all correspondance thereafter is ignored.

I discussed this subject in depth with Barclaycard and they said if anything is charged to my card then they all I do is informed them and they will put the value in dipute and follow the matter up themselves. There will be no interest charged on the value until the dispute is settled. Guess what, the insurance company did do what they were instructed not to, so yes I did pass it to Barclaycard, and yes the company failed to provide any evidence to support their action. The value was removed from my card and charged back to the insurer.... I never hear another thing about it.

Unfortunately is is people like lisyloo that fuel today's crap world ! You make me laugh.

WE DO NOT WANT AUTOMATIC RENEWAL

Is that the royal "we" are do you presume to talk for others without knowing?
MANY COMPANIES NOW ONLY ACCEPT DEBIT/CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS TO ENSURE THEY GET YOU DETAILS

That will increasingly happen as cheques draw to a close.
the really sad thing is that this practice WILL lead to people simply cancelling their debit/credit card

Only if they are stupid enough not to read their renewal notice.
Unfortunately is is people like lisyloo that fuel today's crap world

lisyloo is a respected poster who posts with common sense.

Personally, I dont like auto renewal but 3/4 of people renew with the same provider each year so the majority benefit. It doesnt take 2 minutes to say you are not going to renew and some people use that as a chance to see if they can haggle the price down.

lisyloo, clearly you either work for an insurance company or you have a very sad life.
    No neither.
    Why do you say that?
I actually do get a bit annoyed where people call me biased simply because their views don't match with mine. Perhaps you ought to ask yourself why you are doing that i.e. seeking to minimise the other person because you don't agree with their views.
I have never worked in finance.
I don't have a sad life. I've learn a lot from these boards, manage my finances well and have a plethora of options for a second career and therefore financial security as I'm constantly learning.
What is it that you find sad?
WE DO NOT WANT AUTOMATIC RENEWAL
I can hear what you are saying.
My suggestion is to buy a policy WITHOUT automatic renewal.
I do it all the time.
ebike (and therefore possibly ecar & evan), sheilas wheels and esure do not do this if you pay annually.
Obbviously you need to understand that there are many aspects to car insurance and if you pick one on the payment critera then you may not get others aspects as well e.g. best serviec, best price.
I always find it something of a compromise.
But if that is paramount to you then the solution is simple. DONT GET A POLICY WITH AUTOMATIC RENEWAL.
WE DID NOT ASK FOR AUTOMATIC RENEWAL
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you don't get to call the shots on the policy details.
You can of course chose which policy to buy.
Customers don't get to dictate policy details, that's a fact (whether you like the messeger or the delivery or not).
MANY COMPANIES NOW ONLY ACCEPT DEBIT/CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS TO ENSURE THEY GET YOU DETAILS ................THEY THEN INSTIGATE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL DESPITE ANYTHING YOU SAY TO THE CONTRARY
Well I can tell you for a fact that esure and Sheilas don't.
So pick your company if that's a criteria of paramount importance.
AND FINALLY WHY SHOULD THE CLIENT BE PUT IN A POSITION TO HAVE TO 'DO SOMETHING' TO CANCEL SOMETHING THEY DO NOT WANT
Cos, you don't run the business and call the shots.
Start you own insurance company and you can call the shots.
If you really think that insurers 'make clear' their intension you need to open your eyes.
I can read and insurance policy quite well actually.
You seem to be the one that doesn't seem to be able to open your eyes and read.
If you could you'd have a policy like the ones I've had where they don't automatically renew.
You call me sad, but you don't seem to be able to buy what you want when it's openly available on the open market.
The value was removed from my card and charged back to the insurer.... I never hear another thing about it.
You may have been lucky this time and they may have c**ked it up.
Other insurers may pursue you through the courts and get ballifs in.
Your system does not work, you just got lucky.
Unfortunately is is people like lisyloo that fuel today's crap world !
    Ridiculous thing to say.
I am in no way responsible for anything to do with the insurance insurance industry or the banking system.
To make presonal remarks to diminish the another poster is infantile.
Everything I have said is true, bu I'm not responsible for any of it.
It says something about you that your only defence about the facts is to attack the person delivering them.

If you don't want automatic renewal then OPEN YOUR EYES AND DON'T BUY IT.
