Automatic Car Insurance Renewal

You seem to be implying that if we get knocked over by an uninsured motorist we won't be compensated for our injuries.
No Quentin, I have not said or implied that.
Usual mis-interpretation over.
Just because there is an insuerer of "last resort" does not in any way make it ok for people to go without insurance.0 -
Yes, you can. It's one of the few primary ways the public has to fight back against the predatory practices of some industries.
I am not sure what you mean here Foggytown.
If you stop a DD they will create a new one.
If you cancel a credit card they will charge it anyway.
If none of that works, they will sell on the debt to some company who almost certinly WILL use dodgy pracitce - like calling you 10 times a day.
I'm not saying these people act professionally or legally, but I am saying that's whay they do.0 -
Our old car broke and so we applied for a SORN. We applied to the old insurance company for new quote online for the car but it was too high and so we decided to go elsewhere. We had no renewal notice through and happily carried about our business. Kwik Fit have just taken just under £70 from our account. Now we called them on around the 18th June to tell them we weren't renewing but they say no record of the call has been logged and so they now want £116 on top of the £70 already cancel a policy on a car that was SORN before the renewal date of the insurance.
We are currently waiting for a manager call back as they say that we didn't cancel and we must pay. I find this all a little too easy for the insurance company to make money out of people.
Does anyone know what I can do about this?0 -

Tell the date and time your rang them and the name of the person you spoke to. That should have that on file anyway but if you have it and they deny it then it puts you in a strong position.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Hiya,
I work in a renewals department for car insurance, and the auto renewl is there so that your not driving without insurance on the car. So unless you have proof you sold it/haven't been driving it they have to charge a cancellation fee, because if the car had been in an accident, they would have had to have paid out. Cancelling your direct debits is never enough, when the direct debit is set up as part of the guarantee it asks if you cancel please inform that company AS WELL as your bank....hence why the policy was still active.
But like previous posts have said, if you have proof it's been SORN or sold etc then you can get the money back as the car hasn't actually been insured.0 -

This is not so.
All policyholders pay in to the MIB uninsured driver scheme (via their insurer) for just this scenario.
Unnecessary scaremongering over.
That takes years and years, and you get pittance back to be honest!0 -

We have seen two threads on this board today from people that have left their insurances lapse without realising. One of whom was stopped by the police and looks like they are getting 6 points and a fine.
You get people moaning about automatic renewal and others wishing they had it. The insurance companies cant win on this front.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). ?
If you claim under the MIB's Uninsured Driver Agreement then your damages will be no different to those that you would be entitled to under the Road Traffic Act.
Most insurers offer personal injury cover of some sort as standard with their policy that has a quicker turnover for payout than the MIB.
I was just saying that's what I know from my professional opinion.
But obv if people are happy to wait and go through the MIB then that's fine too. Each to their own. 0 -

Exactly. All day long people moan about an automatic renewal process. However, when their payments reject they ring up very angry and concerned they're not insured...when they are - and then it's a relief to them. We can never win.
At the end of the day, most companies use automatic renewal as it's a safer option to have to refund money to someone if they've decided not to renew and taken another policy out, rather than to not do it, and these people driving around without insurance....as the knock on effect of that would affect everyone.
If you don't like auto renewal, all you have to do is say when you first take out the policy and your payment details will be removed.0
