Vodafone cancellation gone wrong

Dear Forum,
I've had a monthly contract with Vodafone for over 9 years and have irregulary accepted upgrades.
On the 17th of March I was contacted by a third party phone provider that offered me a new phone and quite a low monthly contract.
I accepted the upgrade but when the new handset arrived I decided that I was not going to accept the upgrade, the quality of the handset was very poor and I was due to receive a new phone through work and I wanted to change my pay monthly personal phone to pay as you. I called the third party provider and did everything they required to cancel the upgrade, sent the handset back by registered post, received confirmation that it had all gone through.
As the matter was closed I deleted all the e-mails related to this transaction as I have limited mailbox space.
I recently went into a Vodafone shop to cancel my contract and go on to pay as you go. They informed me that the upgrade was not cancelled and I am therefore still in contract and it will cost £200 to cancel the contract.
I e-mailed customer services explaining that I had cancelled it, but they were equally unhelpful. They also did not want to or could not divulge the name of the third party provider.
Does anyone know what further recourse I have to try and stop the contract without paying a huge fee.
Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Your contract is with the third party. You need to go back to them, Vodafone will have paid them a commision fee and will not cancel until your 3rd party tells them.
If you sent it registered post you should have the tracking number somwhere that may help.0
