Hosepipe ban

hiya

with the recent announcement of a hosepipe ban for the north west I'm at a loss of how I can water my garden. I have no water butt as my downpipes are all the old cast iron ones and my garage where I could put plastic guttering has hanging baskets all along. I have spent hours and hours on my garden and don't want everything to die now I can't water them. Is old bath water ok to use or will the bubble bath i use in my 3 year olds bath kill my flowers and veg? what about old dish washing water?

Sorry if this is a silly question!

TIA of any replys x

You can use a watering can, Bath water or grey water is fine

I found this 'spoof' article about the hosepipe ban in the North West

Warning! Don't press the link if you object to mild vulgar language.

It made me, a Greater Manchester resident, laugh anyway! :D

By the way, I only use rainwater and grey water (baths and washing up bowls) on my garden - never fresh water from a tap.

Thank you for your replies, I had no idea you could fill a watering can from your hosepipe and use that!! My garden WILL survive :j

I will also use my daughters bath water so the plants will even smell nice :D but here's hoping my potatoes won't taste of apple and watermelon :eek:

    thanks again xx

I have to say I live outside Manchester and my garden is so dry I have had to water it (i have 3 vegetable plots) the grass is sooooo dry the soil has started to crack open and some of the cracks are over an inch wide and over 4 inches long :eek::eek: have not watered the lawn just my vegetables, the hosepipe ban wont mean I use less water it will just take me longer to water my vege :(, you may grumble at me for watering but at least i am saving airmiles by not buying vege that has been flown hundreds of miles to get to a supermarket so I am trying to do my bit for the planet :D:D:D:D:D
Anyway we probably wont get anymore sun just rain now so the ban should not last for long I hope :D:D:D

For what it's worth, my grandad was a passionate gardner, and even rigged up a fancy diverter contraption that routed the water from the kitchen sink and bath drains into a series of irrigation pipes under his garden - whenever it was dry he flicked the switch and all the waste water went on to the garden.

He also said that if watering very dry soil, he actually added a little bit of washing up liquid, as it acted like a wetting agent and helped it soak in better.

That may or may not have been true, but I can say that his garden was immaculate, and his lawn put the local bowling green to shame. So second hand bathwater can't hurt the plants that much :-)

But then you're using a hosepipe!

Fill the watering can from your garden tap.
