A passport in your new name does not become valid until the day of the wedding meaning that you cannot apply for the ESTA until then. If you are not travelling until a few days after your wedding then it may not be a problem.
This is interesting actually - we'd be flying to our honeymoon destination via the States, so I'll check if we need the ESTA if we're only connecting to our onwards journey (I assume we will though, as we'll have to clear customs).
