My passport ran out last week so I can't flee the country if I had to! I'm getting married in June next year so will probably renew it around March / April as you can do it 3 months before (according to the direct gov website anyway). We are hoping to go to America for the honeymoon so think this will be ok, unless someone tells me any different...
  • I've just sent off for my renewal, but I'm having it in my maiden name as we will be booking the honeymoon tickets in that name! Will change it to my new name afterwards x

you could have got your celebrant to sign to say your getting married and have it in your married name and if honeymoon not booked yet then could have booked it in your married name too!

You will have to pay a full price renewal to change your name!

I am keeping my old passport just now as i have 3 years to run on it and refuse to pay just to change the name :)
would love to win an ipad!

Hi for those of you going to the USA you need to remember that you need to apply for an ESTA (visa).

Whilst you can apply for the ESTA anytime, they recomend a minimum of 3 days before you travel. Also you can only apply for an ESTA with a "valid" passport.

A passport in your new name does not become valid until the day of the wedding meaning that you cannot apply for the ESTA until then. If you are not travelling until a few days after your wedding then it may not be a problem.

We originaly booked our honeymoon with my wife's new surname, but were unable to complete the ESTA application so had to change the tickets back to her maiden name, as we were travel 2 days after the wedding, and we felt it would be too stressfull to leave it till the last minute, incase something went wrong and her application wasnt accepted.

Don't forget some country's require six months or more, remaining on your passport to be able to travel with them.

You could go for the one week service

The cost of changing the name on your passport

For an adult passport it costs £77.50 for standard service, £112.50 for the one-week Fast Track service and £129.50 for the Premium one-day service. For a child passport it costs £49 for standard service, £96.50 for the one-week Fast Track service and £109.50 for the Premium one-day service.
