Dependency only as far as defence goes, which I might add the Channel Islands found to their detriment is worthless, your queen is only a lord here, otherwise we have our own parliament, economy, tax system, laws, currency etc, the only thing we get from the uk is from the common purse agreement ie VAT returned to us from goods and services originating here, this is the part stolen by your last chancellor unibrow. other than that we have no national debt, unemployment around 1.2% but more jobs than those signing on, are not part of the EEC so don't have to let all and sundry in, we have a strong work permit system, you don't get benifits until you have worked here 5yrs or lived here 10, keeps the scroungers out. So as you see we don't really depend on the UK that much bar it being a millstone, in fact Ireland is a better trading partner and a lot more reliable, calls for severing links and dropping the dependency are getting a lot stronger of late.Equaliser123 wrote: »Aren't you getting that back anyway from being a British Dependency (emphasis added)?Approach her; adore her. Aylesbury
We have two Tesco's
We have a tiny Sainsbury's and we all want some competition.
Sainsbury's were going to re-develop the derelict old 1950's Odeon site; so Tesco bought the little derelict shop on the side, now Sainsbury's can't build.
It really is a nasty process and they push prices up beyond our sister towns.
eg petrol is 4p /litre more than Wycome or Milton Keynes or indeed watford, all 18 miles + away
so Tesco only match within 6 miles, which is 2 tesco stores.

All goes to prove once they have the monopoly they seek and close locals down they put the price up and milk the community dry.Aylesbury

Sheesh. What chance is there of world peace when a UK dependency is like this.....? I find it a bit boring when we get the "my country is better than yours" on here.
Anyway, I actually thought that nearly 40% of your population was English, but ho hum.0 -
Im all for communities getting together and not allowing the bullyboys muscle in. I miss the days of local produce, Butchers, Fruit n Veg shops, Fishmongers etc, the prices were not that much more as they still had competition from other stores.
As for the bee in your bonnet on the British in general, It sounds more like your trying to inflame prejudice than discuss supermarkets. Take a Chill Pill, if your happy with where you are good for you, we are just as happy where we are thank you.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Very true I shouldn't have followed the bait, my main point was that fortunately Tescos have not been allowed to manipulate a community and it is a pity it does not happen more often, you only have to look at some of the reports from the mid west USA about small towns that are now just a collection of derelect buildings and this has mainly been accounted to walmart moving in outpricing local stores and bankrupting local producers because they could not survive on what the monopoly in the area would pay. This now seems to be happing in some areas over there from what people have said, maybe now is the time for everyone to wake up unless they want their lives controlled by these companies.Im all for communities getting together and not allowing the bullyboys muscle in. I'm no fan of Tesco and to be fair to Tescos, other large supermarkets as well.
Its not so much they exist, more that they exist in multiples of 10 everywhere.
My town in England has 4 Tesco's (2 extras), 5 Asda's (1 walmart megastore), 4 Sainsburys', a Morrisons, several Somerfield !!! Co-Ops, a Waitrose, a Lidl and an Aldi. Not to mention there are 4 Tesco expresses, 2 sainsbury locals, co-ops, etc. All within about 8-10 mile radius fom home.
My town in Swizterland, all local shops (and not that expensive), the nearest supermarket (Migros) is about a 60 minute drive away and only marginally cheaper on some stuff. My place in France, same again, the nearest Carrefour is about 40 minutes drive away whereas the village has a butchers, bakers, general grocery store, etc.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
And jimbims will never again complain about how expensive the Isle of Man is.0

I only shop at Tesco because of the points, they offer a recycling scheme where half the time you never get the points(even if you have confirmation of delivery) and not to mention they have just got too big for their boots lately. I won't shop at Tesco for everything because I find Home Bargains cheaper for cleaning stuff and toilet rolls and I like my local greengrocers. Not to mention their bakery is appalling never fresh, Morrisons & Sainsburys are better for that.No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!
Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T0
