Tesco told where to go

Tesco in their usual way soend large sums on consutants trying to bully through a large store expansion here in the Isle of Man, this would have had severe impact on local shops, but common sense won the day, Tesco have been told where to shove it.
The application was refused mainly on 2 grounds, 1 it would cause loss of trade to local shops and 2 VaT for goods bought in the store and taxes on profits would be paid to the UK treasury rather than the IoM treasury

That leaves IoM shoppers with just Shop-Sh*te as a supermarket.

Why? Tesco is still here just no expansion to sell cheap cloths and other tat they offer, at least shoprite the money stays here. Oh and you forgot the Coop.

malkie76, most people here would rather pay a little bit more for better service and to prevent money going to the UK.

Just take your heads out of the sand and have a look at what these big stores have done to communities in the USA and what is happening to a lot of yours in the UK because of them and then say its not worth paying on average a couple of quid more for local stuff.

    For us
Food shop local = £35.80 all monies stay in local economy
Food shop Tesco = £33.10 all monies go into the UK coffers

Doesn't take much to see which is better for us.

that's one way of looking at it.
The other view is that as tesco, or any other supermarket take over, the consumer ultimately loses out with choice and all their local businesses being forced under by the sheer buying power of the supermarkets. With the supermarkets the tail wags the dog. the supermarkets dictate what price they will pay suppliers, and the suppliers are forced to accept.

Customer service in supermarkets is, at best, third rate. Compare that with your local butcher or greengrocer who knows all his customers by name, and often will go the extra mile to provide the best service. Not only that, because the supermarkets dictate the price they will pay suppliers, these suppliers have to survive. Quite often they do this by putting up the prices for everyone else.

I've seen market sectors where large chains are selling products to customers for less than the trade price an independant can buy it from the supplier. Not only that but large chains, supermarkets cherry-pick popular lines from a range. Whereas the independant has made, or is forced into making a stocking commitment to an entire line or range of goods.

I think here meat and milk is a good example, by law milk must be sold everywhere at a fixed minumum price, this means more people use local shops or milk delivery both of which charge the same as Tesco but are able to provide it fresher. with meat Tesco or any other shop are not allowed to import fresh meats only frozen, thus Tesco have been unable to dictate the price they pay for it to local farmers and most butchers have a share in farms, hence butchers have usually far better meat in both quality and price. As for fruit and veg local suppliers have refused all attempts by Tesco to dictate prices and it is quite often of better quality and price in local shops, tesco import most at a cost to them, same for bread they have to pay the going rate as they do not have the facility or permission to run a bakery. As for this failed develpment, they had been told at the outset that they had no chance of getting it through yet they still tried to force it using their own tame consultants and trying to use their barrister who has zero rights here. as was expected our government took note of local opinion both from shops and residents along with the Dept of Transport etc and quite rightly gave that precidence over the wishes of Tesco. many major stores from the UK have set up here and run quite well alongside local stores giving fair prices and choice, what tesco wanted was a monopoly so they could dictate to local suppliers and shove competition out, instead they got egg on their face and sent off with their tail between their legs.

  • The SOS of Tesco - Say hello, Offer help, Say goodbye. A load of junk!

I for one would far rather pay more for good quality produe and service, so I do! I shop where I can at the local greengrocers, fruit shop, butchers and bakers. It takes longer, but I always get a smile and a warm chat.

I drew the line when, three years ago, I went into Tescos at 7.30pm at night, to buy milk. They had run out of semi skimmed. Yet, in the same store, I could buy the latest DVD (still more expensive than on the web) cheap clothes, any size of shoes I wanted, car insurance etc etc. I refuse to shop under such conditions.
