I have also over last few month had several emails pretending to be from Paypal and Barclays asking me to click on the links in the emails, Never ever click on these are enter your details. I have reporetd several times these emails but Paypal never reply and Barclays seem to bounce my emails back to me. I did on one occasion report one site to the hosting company and the site was pulled down.

I used Roboform for a while, but the trial ran out! Have installed IE7 just now. Definitely never click on those kind of emails ... if in any doubt, just log in direct or contact the site itself first. Paypal really aren't great at customer service are they?! Odd that Barclays would bounce them back, as surely it's in their interests to sort these problems out, or lose customers! Good for you for getting one of the scumbags offline :-)

That's not cool that they changed your information. Once it happens, at least the extra measures put in place after that should make it a lot less likely to happen again. I was surprised they hadn't changed any of my information.

    Many thanks for advice, Cat
  • It happened to me a couple of months back..... and I NEVER, NEVER have clicked through on any of those emails (only survey links, which are different email address, user name, etc.

The only reason I knew, is that whoever hacked into my account tried to change the email address and I received a confirmation that it had been done.

Thought it was an error, so went in and checked to see a $10,000 bike listed! All very suspicious though, as it was listed for sale in US, and sold within a couple of hours to the UK.

I had a panic, as there were about £60 worth of seller fees added straight to my account - but Ebay acted very quickly when I reported it, refund, etc.

I had to do all the questions for forgotten password, luckily none of that had been changed, so I was able to reset my email back to what it should be, and change my password of course.

Would advise anyone to make sure that the PAYPAL password is different from the Ebay one - if someone does hack into your Ebay account, they can get to your paypal account with a link there, but they will need the password - at least if its different to your Ebay account, they should not be able to get into that too.

$10,000 listing and £60 fees - no wonder you panicked! My experience was the same except for the amounts (about 12 computer systems listed). Ebay acted very quickly, plus it was straightforward to go through the procedure of unfreezing the account. Definitely good advice to people about Paypal, especially as getting things sorted properly with Paypal is an uphill battle at the best of times!

My account was hijacked about 18 months ago but I don't know how as i never follow a link from an email at all. The person that did it started when I was in the middle of a weeks holiday and not on the net so by the time I'd realised it had already been going on for 2 or 3 days. They had 100's of mobile phones listed and some of them were being bid on for over £100. Ebay took about 24 hours to sort it out and it ended up taking about £20 out of my bank in listing fee's. The person that did it sent me an email offering me a free top of the range mobile phone if I let them use my account. I got the Police involved who traced the IP number to an internet cafe in Walthamstow that I had been in a couple of weeks earlier.

  • Just had something odd happen ... all the messages in my inbox vanished (there's no way I deleted them), so I've done what I should have done the other day and changed my email password! Would there be any way to recover them, or is that a daft question?! Am not managing to get back into email with the new password, but I take it it takes a little while for the system to update, although on ntl's site it said details updated.

  • hmmm. that's very odd. Passwords update immediately.
Theoretically the inbox items should be in your trash bin for 24 hours (with most providers) however it sounds like someone is in your e-mail acc at the same time as you. If you can get into your e-mail, check your personal details and alternative contact e-mail again. Make sure that some scumbag has not been sent your new e-mail password...
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.

Do you access your email via web or using an email client such as Outlook/Express, Netscape, etc?

If the latter, have you remembered to change your settings there too? Maybe a silly question I know, but just a thought!

Incidentally, on Sunday, I couldn't access any of my secondary accounts via webmail, even though all settings are correct. NTL. Bit flakey sometimes!

Hi smartie, thanks for advice. Thankfully this morning the new password seems to have been processed/was able to access mail. Unfortunately all the inbox messages weren't even in the trash bin when they all vanished.

Sorry if I'm not understanding ... do you mean to check any email addresses I have set up to be forwarded to this main email address? I haven't received an email from ntl about my new password ... I'd changed it on the ntl site, and confirmation came up there. If I haven't received an email about it, could this definitely mean the scumbag has been sent it? Long time since I've changed the password on this account and I can't remember if an email came through from ntl. I think it's maybe best I go back onto the ntl site and change my username and everything, just to be certain. But it will also mean changing any email accounts I forward to this one too?

    Cheers, Cat
