Pop a little bit of the paint onto the tin near where the colour is shown. If it dries completely different colour, then it is faulty or not as described. If it is close to the colour shown, then it is your walls.

Have you stirred the paint? to ensure that all the pigments are stirred throughout the mix?

I've had a similar problem to this when using mixed to order at Crown Decorating Centres.

    Hi, update.
They agreed to credit the unopened tin for the offer price of £12.50, so I was happy with that. They said the paint was made with a lilac base which is why it dried such a deep lilac colour. I bought 2 tins of dulux malt chocolate instead to go over the top, but 2 coats of the dulux is still showing the lilac paint underneath!

I have gone back to B&Q tonight, to ask them what colour paint I should repaint the walls to clear the lilac (ie, white or magnolia) They are getting the paint manager to contact me tomorrow as they feel the paint problem is unacceptable as 2 coats of dulux should have covered it.

I said i'm not particularly happy about needing to paint the walls 4 times to get the colour I want, and they agreed tonight (but not this morning) that the paint should not have dried lilac.

They have been able to recall the transaction on the till so there was no problem with regards to missing receipt.

Thanks, I normally only use dulux endurance matt, and have never had a problem with that with regards to painting over strong colours before, this time I used B&Q silk, and then Dulux silk (wanted to be able to wash it due to slobbery dogs in living room!) and its been nothing but hassle!

I just used Crown Breatheasy Brown Sugar and Toasted Almond :D

Didnt use a primer but it went on fine enough with a roller and covered the patterned walls underneath.

Funnily enough, the paint i used is the same one a lot of people were complaining about to watchdog about the horrid smells (although there were reports of dulux paint doing this also). My walls are fine and dont smell at all so i'm inclined to agree with the companies that it was bacteria in the walls causing the smell and not the paint itself.

Another update. I spoke to the top paint man at B&Q today, he said basically silk paint is naff, contains lots less pigment than matt, and they replaced the paint again, this time with dulux endurance matt 5ltr, a new roller set and a set of paint brushes.

They have advised me to wait a week to let the silk paint cure fully before we put the matt paint on, and adding more coats of silk could have made the problem worse! Fingers crossed that should be the problem solved, please dear lord I hope so!

He also admitted that it could have taken up to 6 coats of the silk to give the true colour of the paint and cover the lilac paint.

Thanks everyone for the advice and listen to me ramble on!
