Replacing a mains stopcock

Hi

My mains stopcock has developed a very slow leak so thinking it might be time to replace it.

It is in a very accessible place and I've been quoted £100 to supply and fit.

Does this seem reasonable?

    Hi Justjohn

I do diy but not plumbing - that is my rule, specially where mains water is involved.

The leak is near the top on the other side of the tap. I've no idea if it is copper or not I'm afraid.

I live in a small village in Dorset so quite rural. However, the last time I used a plumber in the village he charged me £55 for 10 minutes work replacing the tap on my washing machine plumbing. Therefore I thought I'd try someone else this time. This guy probably has 25 minutes journey each way so he has to cost this in of course.

its easy ...my wife hates me messing with water...lol

just turn water off out side (remember how many turns)
    remove stopcock
cut ollives of if the are carp
if not you may just be able to use olives and nuts from old stopcock
tighten nuts, turn water on slowly....real slow ...no leaks then full

thats assuming old stopcock is compression fitting...if its soldered then old stop !!!! will need cut off. if its horrible push fit it is even easier.

most peeps do not mess with water in case they flood the place...remember that will only happen if you let it lol

    Hi Justjohn

I know you mean well and want to save me some money, but I do not even know what an olive is (in the plumbing sense!).

I really do not mind paying a plumber a fair price for a job and peace of mind and all that, but I just don't want to be ripped off this time.

Hi. I always thought anything inside the property was the homeowner's responsibility.
