people who take a calcium supplement with added vitamin D.
As this supplement contains only 200 IU of vitamin d it would be unlikely at UK latitudes to have any impact on Vitamin d insufficiency though for the USA, which is nearer the Equator it may be sufficient to enable those nearest the threshold to notice a difference.
BIO–TECH Pharmacal Inc. Is the best source for Vitamin D3 Cholecalciferol and you would need one of these every other day to raise your levels significantly See Barriers to Optimizing Vitamin D3 Intake for the Elderly -- Heaney .... you will see you need "an additional 2600 iu/d (65 microg/d) of oral vitamin D3 to ensure that 97.5% of older women have 25(OH)D values at or above desirable levels." The same would of course apply to younger people who over-use sunscreen and/or spend too little time outside at midday fully dressed.

To deal with mental health problems such as SAD and raise levels sufficiently to deal with stress 4000iu/d is more effective than 1000iu/d It follows that 200iu would be such a trivial amount that it is unlikely,(at this latitude) to have any impact.

  • I am glad to see the number of people with IBS (i mean, not glad that you have it, but glad that people are open and discussing and trying to help each other, and it's not just me!) I've had IBS for 7 years...

I have a flexible sigmoidoscopy next week which I am dreading.. none of the IBS medications, buscopan, immodium, peppermint oil, help for me.

I have had my gallbladder removed but I had IBS a long time before that - and it hasn't really changed since.

They won't give me a colonoscopy until after the sigmoidoscopy so it is a long waiting process and I'm not looking forward to it, but I would strongly urge anyone who is worried about IBS to just tell their GP and rule out for certain that it is an IBD or something even more serious.

    Good luck all.
  • i was just clearing out some things and found an old bottle of peppermint tablets - i know they're meant to help IBS, but for me they just made me burp peppermint all the time!! it was entirely bizarre!!

and i also remembered another tip - never have a drink with your meal (can't remember why, just that it helped!). but now i can't remember if it should be before or afterwards..... or if it doesn't matter......... sorry!

  • I suffer with this really bad at times, well i did do. I cured it by eating rice. Potatoes set it off as did pasta so i decided to to stir fry my chicken and veg and throw it all in the rice cooker with some stock, problem solved. I gave the dog some one evening and it cured her IBS as well, maybe worth a try. Providing i have at least one meal of rice a day i can eat anything without triggering it.

The sigmoidoscopy is easy thats when they found my polyp in my colon but said this was not the cause of my IBS.

The colonscopy was bad for me 2 weeks on still not recovered mainly due to the bowel preparation.

You cant say for certain you have IBS until all other possibilities have been medically checked so you are right to say make sure visit your GP.

    Whats Buscopan ?

Peppermint oil or tablets or tea can cause upper GI problems such as GERD or heartburn in some people like me so its best to avoid it if it causes you problems.

Also its best to avoid drinking 20 mins before and after eating food if possible.

Buscopan is an anti spasmodic which my doc prescribed me to help with the cramps associated with IBS - I have also seen it for sale in Tesco in the digestive health aisle

Here's the wikipedia for it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buscopan

I tried Peppermint Oil Capsules from Holland and Barratt and they have done nothing for my IBS apart from helping a little with the bloating (and making me burp peppermint)

I have gone back to my doctors for a repeat prescription of Mebeverine (antispasmodic)
  • I've got IBS and I take mebeverine for it (colofac) I also am careful what I eat. I find that eating whole foods like brown pasta, brown bread, brown rice etc and making meals myself helps me a lot. Can't really go for a chinese, goes almost straight through me!!! Do love chinese food though :o Although  if I make one at home from scratch I'm fine

  • I've suffered from Ibs and ultrasive colitis since 1992. I know where every toilet is in every shopping centre, high steet. I have just finished a course of steroids so my uc/ibs is a lot better at the moment but a couple of months ago it was a nightmare. I was even going to the toilet at 3 in the morning.
My doctor prescribes me codeine phosphate tablets. I go to the loo a few times in the morning then if I need to go out somewhere where it's not convenient to be running to the loo I take a couple of tablets by the time i go out they taken affect. not only do they stop you going to the toilet but there also a pain killer as well ( for the spasms). the thing i like is the don't bung you up like the imodium and you'll get up the next morning and are able to poo again. I also think taking the aloe vera does help and also eating bananas. Start eating 3 aday and then gradually cut down. I read somewhere that something in bananas is good for bowel disease and other bowel related problems but I can't remember what it is. The peppermint tablets or colofac never worked for me. nither did accupunture which cost me about £300 quid. you'll try anything when your desperate.

question. Is it a good idea to try colonic irrigation if you suffer from Ibd/ibs ?
    HOW MUCH ?
