Where is it in Egypt you are travelling to?

Going to Hurghadda (sp?) which is on the west coast of the red sea.

Going to wait until get there before deciding which excursions but will be looking to do a dive or two and maybe a trip to the pyramids if its not going to be too rushed.
    Any suggestions for excursions?

Would be good if they still took sterling cash at 10 to 1 as thats better than I can get here :) Woudl they offer the same rate for travellers cheques?

Got some euros lying around so will bung them in the pile to take.

Unless you fly it's an overnight stay in Cairo with a very early start & very late return. You won't be fit to dive for a couple of days afterwards.

Luxor is the better choice for an overnight trip from Hurghada (which is a dump BTW) - it's about 3-4 hours each way but you'll have to travel in a convoy
  • We go to Sharm El Sheikh every year - used to be one cafe and a dive shop - now it's like magaluf,

Never, ever taken travellers cheques, and as everyone says you can pay in sterling or there are ATMs pretty much everywhere now.

Am going to get the AMEX travelers cheque card fnow though as we travel abroad more - getting more safety concious.....

Thats why I booked Cairo in the first place. Better than doing all that to see the pyramids and it worked out cheaper in the long run.

I've heard it's the Egypt version of Benidorm or Blackpool. But holidays are what you make them so you should be OK.

We have been to Hurghada twice in a year...it always tends to be people who havent been there who slate places!
We went for a fortnight both times, first time went to Cairo by coach and Luxor by coach.Depending where you are staying you can go snorkelling in the beach..very MSE way to save money, first time we booked the snorkelling trip, but were wiser the next time!
If you head into Sekalla(city centre) you will be "hassled" to go and look in their shops, politely say "La Shokran" which means no thanks...if you want to buy anything, haggle, haggle, haggle and if you dont like the price, walk away they will soon come down in price.
You will have a great time!

Thanks that sounds more positive. I hope its not like benidorm as we specifically asked the agent we didn't want a benidorm type place.

Think we are staying very close to the beach so was planning to do some snorkelling.

Was expecting the hassle from sellers and having to haggle ( I quite enjoy that though) .

Do you have any names of reputible tour operators you used for going to cairo and luxor?
