Try something like this Binatone Big Button....a92xg.jpg

Large vibrant display, big buttons and loud ringer make this ideal for the elderly or hearing/sight impaired SIM Free - works with any UK network (except 3)
    Charging cradle
    Amplified sound
    Vibration alert
    Easy to read keypad
    Extra loud ringer
    3 Fast key memory buttons
    Supports SMS text messages
    Built-in torch

The big button mobile phone with its over-sized vibrant display and big button interface is ideal for the elderly or people with poor vision, hearing or manual dexterity. The integrated flashing red light, strong vibration and extra loud ringer means you'll never miss another call. The big button mobile features all the usual features you would expect from a mobile such as SMS text messaging, 100 name phonebook, alarm clock and caller ID in a simple, easy to use handset. Supplied with handy charging dock.

It's on offer at Maplins for £39.99 at the moment, but you might be able to find cheaper elsewhere.
    Hope this helps?

The Binatone mentioned above is good for what you are looking for, we bought it for my father in law a few weeks ago. He is awful with any kind of technology and he is coping pretty well with it, well we have received a few phone calls from him so can assume that it's pretty straight forward. We made sure that the ringer was up extra loud too as he is a bit hard of hearing, it's so loud now but does the trick for him anyway!

Just wanted to add that the 'cradle' that it sits in is great as it helps you remember where it has been left while at home, also saves on fiddly wires to plug in which isn't always easy for older people.
