Sky+ or another recording device?

My Mum wants to know about getting a Sky+ box.
She is currently subscribing to the entertainment and kids packages with Sky. She would like a recording device that will record programmes when she is out/sleeping/busy and can pause live TV. There's Sky+ but I know if you cancel Sky sometime in the future you lose the '+' functions. So would it be better to get a DVR? Would the DVR record the Sky channels or just the FreeView ones?
And there are some recording we would like to keep, so would a DVD recorder be best? I know there are Blu-Ray recorders but I don't know if they are really worth it. And could you link your old video recorder up to the new DVD recorder to transfer your irreplacable recordings?
Thanx!

Depends what channels she wants to record. A PVR (not DVR) can record all the Freeview channels or the Freesat ones. If she wants to record Sky subscription channels then she will have to pay for Sky+. If she wants to record non-sub channels then a Freeview or Freesat PVR will do the job without the need for any ongoing payment. No free lunch, and no free laptop
