Open university?

Has anyone tried the Creative Writing course with Open University? What did you think of it?

Just signed up to it (starting this October) and using it to go towards my BA hons Open Degree, looks like a good course, has good reviews from students and very popular according to a few tutors Ive spoken to.

Are you currently studying with the OU? Have you been to any open events - would recommend them, you get to look at course materials and speak to the tutors

i know someone did a programming course and they said it was good but...i havent personally done any course.

I didn't know there were open events. I have never studied with OU. I don't have a job at the moment, the price of the course is really putting me off. But I'm thinking if it will help me get to do the job I really want to do in the future, I should try and find the money to pay for it.

Are you in the UK? Have you been out of work for a while?

I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least some funding to help you pay for the course.

You can find events in your area by going into the contact area on the OU site then clicking on events.

You'd be surprised the amount of course funding and help there is available, I know I was. It works out much cheaper than a normal degree from a local university too, and you can work the workload around your life/job which is also good. The open events are really helpful, would definitely recommend popping along to one or two.

Hi - I've studied with the OU for what seems like forever (about 7 years - starting with a certificate course and finishing with an MBA ) . If you are wanting to see whether it suits you the OU offer free taster courses ( google open learn to find the web site). Included in there - under the arts and humanities section is a 12 hour short course Start Writing Fiction A174-1. This should provide a taster of their creative writing courses.

Have a look at the course descriptions, they usually have reviews written by the students. Very handy when choosing your courses and full of handy hints.

How can I find out about course funding? Can I find out the open events?
I'm not enitrely bothered by the qualification. I mean it would be a plus to get a qualification that looks great to employers but I'm more concerned about what I will learn. I want to be a writer of novels and scripts.

For the funding info I would contact the finance department, you can find the number on the OU website. I think if you earn below £18000 you may be entitled to help (don't take my word for it) depending on personal circumstances,

The Open Events' tutors will be able to help with any advice on course choice.

i am just waiting for the A215 course results, and loved the course....

i am waiting for my results to see if i can do the level 3 course - if i don't get made redundant, and end up back at uni full time... (if they have spoaces on the course...)

my tutor was lovely, and the materials were really good.... it was a real good laugh.
