freezing pack lunches

  • I have to go to lengths like that to stop packed lunch stuff being eaten before it's needed. I've just about cracked it now, but resent paying extra for the long-life desserts I've got hidden in the depths of the kitchen cupboards when I know (because they never stay in the fridge for long enough) that Lidl yoghurts would be just as acceptable. I don't think you can freeze these though, can you?

Maybe if I got a big plastic tub for the fridge and disguised it to look like it contained liver and tripe casserole... :)

well my dd1 aged 14 nearly helped herself to chopped onions from the freezer yesterday cos they wer frozen in an icecream carton!!  :rotfl: :rotfl: maybe if you got a box and labelled it 'brains for the dog' or something similar they wouldnt look in it!!!! actualy I might try it myself!!! maybe putting all things to be saved in one of the veg boxes well wrapped with a couple of mouldy potatoes on top of them!!!!! that should put them off!!!

  • That's well worth knowing. At least I won't have to resort to the liver and tripe thing now :)

  • I have frozen with success:

Ham, cheese, peanut butter, jam, marmite, lemon curd and chicken.

  • I'll take everyone's word that this actually works but won't be putting it to the test!

I have to say although making two packed luches in the morning is a chore (especially if it's a tuna day) I am gagging at the thought of a defrosted sandwich. Surely the bread would be soggy and how do you know that the filling would defrost 100%. I wouldn't like it myself so personally wouldn't inflict it on the kids just to save 5 mins. Frozen yogs, juice cartons etc sound a good idea though, especially as a dual purpose cooler.
  • Frozen sandwiches are a good idea when the weather is really hot. My kids have nowhere cool to keep thier packed lunches at school, so unless frozen i dont supply ham sandwiches for instance. As I go to work very very early I always make the packed lunches as soon as kids get home from school and leave them in the fridge. If frozen I just take them out and put in the fridge before I leave. I bought frozen mini pork pies from farm foods. They were quite cheap too and I didnt have to worry about the sell by date and if it would be dodgy freezing them either.

  • The main reason I did it was....I used to buy reduced very decent bread,,,normally £1.20 a loaf reduced to 10p and I had to use it up. So made a huge batch of sarnies and froze them.

The bread doesnt go soggy and the contents of sarnie are fine!

My DD didnt mind me inflicting her:D
