What is the best TV package for me?

I have been with Sky for over 8 years and have reached a point where I feel that they are considerably overcharging me for the services I receive. Based on the following, do people have any recommendations for alternative packages?

I am looking for:
  • BBC and ITV in HD
  • The ability to record/pause/rewind TV
  • Extra free to air channels such as E4 etc.
  • Possibly Sky Sports
I haven't fully researched the BT offering yet but have had a brief look into Virgin Media and Freesat and would be interested in people's thoughts on the quality of service from both.

Thanks in advance.

If you can live without Sky Sports, then Freesat is the obvious choice. Just use your existing dish with a Freesat HD box, the Humax Foxsat HDR will give you HD on BBC/ITV, plus all the normal PVR functions.
The only cost will be the box at around £200, after that it's free forever. No installation required, assuming you already have a twin feed from the LNB for Sky+. It's just a straight box swap.
If you are spending around £40 a month on Sky, you will recoup the cost in just 5 months.
BT Vision is a waste of space, it's just Freeview with a limited on-demand content-and it requires you to take BT's overpriced broadband.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

And their Sky Sports package is delivered through the broadband using IPTV.

If you're looking at a new TV as well, a number now come with FReesat HD or Freeview HD already preinstalled, such as the Panasonic TX range:

  • I've gone from £60 - £20 per month by cancelling movies and getting rid of the HD pack. As i've still got the HD box i recieve the Freesat HD channels and have sky +. The other option was to buy a Freesat box with HD and the facility to record for around £229 (richer sounds).
