What evidence do you have that the hard disk is faulty, other than the HDD tool failing?

It's taken me a week to get it to turn back on. It goes into system error, various reasons, insert boot disc - normally solve by telling it to look for the hard drive, blue screen and there are more. oh and the tick, tick ticking.

I've found it. What information do you need from it?

If it's really failing, you'll be lucky to get a disk image to work

If you have an external drive, try the disk image now before you spend any money

Yes, Please let us know why you think you HDD is dying. have you ran chkdsk or another 3rd part scan?
Also I've read in a few places your notebook only supports 1gb of ram so you should check your PC is actually utilising that extra 0.5GB you added.
Finally, I agree with previous posts about the cost effectiveness of your project. There are good deals on notebooks and even NETbooks that compare favourably to your notebook. So before you go out purchasing any HDD tools or OS's etc consider carefully how much a small new note/netbook would be.

I wonder, as you said you have no installation cd, you would not have been able to carry out a fresh install. You might simply have a corrupt OS. Only "might" mind you. The ticking noise would be a concern

Do you have the name of the BSOD. It might be indicating some other hardware.

Sorry for the double post, I hadn't refreshed when I asked my first question

It's under function and it didn't really say a lot.

    SM BIOS

Are you telling me that there is nothing under; BIOS, Motherboard and Vendor?
Yes, File is for saving the Log, which I recommend that you create and Copy & Paste here.

If you can't get any information, the safest bet may be to go for the Western Digital WD1200BEVE 120GB for £47.98.
The reason for this is that there is a possible limitation at 137GB and we don't know how your BIOS will handle it. So 120GB may be your best best. Of course the 80GB should be fine too.
Since storage size is not of the essence, this should solve the problem.
