thanks for info. However it is me who owes them as I had windows sorted out but they did not cash the last two cheques I sent them.any idea where I stand with this?:
  • I have had this Company at my house Quoting for 2 bay windows and a Front entrance area. Quoted me just over £7,000 and with the 1/3 grant off plus my deposit in cash of £400 leaves me with a balance outstanding of just over £4,300.
Had several problems getting anyone here and didn't think I would have a lot of choice in good double glazing companies to deal with. I thought I was killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Not only getting the grant but a double glazing company referred by a government group.
Took me from October of last year till 3rd January 2011 to get the rep down to quote. Then another month before I had a surveyor sent. He told me they could not do what I had asked and don't encapsulate stain glass windows, but could copy. I had not agreed to the copies and wanted the original stain glass windows.
Finally after several weeks a Les Holmes spoke with me over the phone to say they could do it and would send his best 2 surveyors out. Took the about 4 weeks but did finally turn up. All seemed well until Mr. Holmes came to sort out my quote. I had told him I had since had several quotes for the same windows and FENSA registered as required which were working out at almost the same as his did with the 1/3 off! He said he would take all my trouble etc into consideration and was certain he could redo the quote as well as assuring me that even though he was no longer with the grant people they had approved mine and I would still get it.
Fortnight Friday gone, my daughter left for School in the morning and on shutting the front door the quarter light in my bedroom fell out just missing her! This is still the old window, but was one of the main reasons why I needed new windows in. They knew this as well as I was having trouble opening and shutting my current front door in the wet weather as have already been ripped off by a joiner who charged me a couple of thousand to do a new hardwood surround which turned out to be MDF! All this they knew. I told them my plight and they seemed a decent Company.
They have my £400 cash deposit and I have nothing! He promised to return it, but hasn't. I am now meant to send via recorded delivery a letter to ask for my deposit back and give about 14 days notice to him. How can I do this when they are no longer at any of the addresses? Plus I need that money back to put to another company now for Double Glazing, and can't do it till I get that back!

It is a small amount (in legal terms the small claims court handles up to £5k) so you must sue them to get your cash back. They may not be a Ltd company, if they are a sole trader then you can go after the owner personally. Other wise write it off to experience and move on with your life.

Unfortunately, getting dishonest people to act honestly is practically impossible, you can spend vast amunts of effort getting nowhere and or get on with finding a reputable company, one that is FENSA registered etc .

There are no companies listed on FENSA site for this post code hu3 4bj http://www.fensa.co.uk/asp/Member_ResultsNearest.asp?Query=hu3%204bj&Nationwide=on

Companies House says there was a company that was disolved late last year.

Be very careful, any new company may be trading with old literature and making claims that pertain to the old company and probably doesnt have the accreditations it claims, also try www.doubleglazingcompanies.com its a review site to check company accreditation claims

  • I would forget it but had to work long hard hours to save for my windows and to me it is a lot of money to just write off. This Abbey Home Improvements is based in St. Helens or at least was. So going to finish off the letter demanding my hard earned cash back and wait the 14 day period. Then leave it in the hands of the Trading Standards people. They are already dealing with complaints referred back to them from the Government grant people who recommended them to me!
Surely this is criminal though if they are one and the same company and where dissolved in November 2010 yet took my cash January 2011. It could have been worse though, the rep. wanted £700 and I can only get £300 at a time out of the hole in the wall and had £100 spare in the house. So they only got £400 instead of £700!

There wasnt another abbey HI I could see on comany house details which suggests this company may be a sole trader in which case you can get him personally, he is personally liable so the small claims court would be easy to follow.

However if he took your money in Jan the contract would have started then so you are outside the 14day cooling off period. sounds like these are just not going to do the job for you and you're well out of it.

I see the company is now listed on www.doubleglazingcompanies.com perhaps you should warn others on there too?
