Medic alert bracelets for <1yr baby

Hi,

Our son was recently diagnosed with an (we presume) egg allergy. He has quite a severe reaction that requires an epi-pen, so I figured I should probably get him a medic alert bracelet. I have one for my anaphylaxis, but am really at a loss as to what kind you get a really young child!

He's 7months old, so something like velcro wouldn't work as he'd be constantly trying to remove it. Anyone know? Is there a company that specialises in them? I've looked on the medic alert website but they don't really seem to have a section for babies!

Thanks

How about engraving a plain expandable christening bracelet, with the details??? Until he's abit older and won't rip off the velcro.

Or those single use wrist bands like the ones for lost children????

Also looking around there are ID pocket things that will go on shoes (when he is in shoes)..... although they do tend to take their shoes off don't they!!!

How about dog tags???? May be engrave some and put them as zip pulls, sew name tags with allergy on into clothes..... there are companies that you can put whatever you like on it..... I found this company good in the past minilabels.co.uk

I can see why you are concerned about this, but surely at such a young age, you know exactly where he is at any time? IE most of the time he's with family (who know about it), or at nursery (where they should know about it). I wouldn't have thought he would need it until he's a bit older and his circle of contacts widens, or at an age where its possible he might wander off on his own or get lost, and a well meaning stranger or security guard might give him a biscuit while they were waiting for you to arrive. I think that medic alert bracelets are mostly for people where the info might be vital in a situation where no-one knows them; which isn't likely for a kid until they're maybe 3 or 4 yrs old? I would think that is why they don't have a section for babies on their website. Only solutions I could think of could pose more of a risk (eg tags or removable things that could be swallowed/ choking hazard etc). Once he's a bit older and verbal you should be able to find a solution and hopefully even have him understand why he must wear it all the time.

generally I would, yes. But it's for this like medical/family emergencies. Say something in which all of us are involved. Just trying to cover my bases!

Thanks for your suggestions trufflebuggy. I'll look into those.

If you wear a bracelet yourself, could you have a second one with baby's info? If you were in an accident together the paramedics would check yours and then see both. Whoever's in charge of the baby could wear it.

It would have to be really clear that it was the baby's info and not the wearer's though.

How about having a T-shirt or two printed - or do your own - with the allergy information on the front? Then you can put your baby in one of these if for any reason you are leaving him/her in an unfamiliar setting?
Alternatively in emergency you could write a brief "allergy alert" on your baby's hands/arms in biro.
Not ideal but it could stop you panicking if you really have to hand the baby over to someone else briefly.

there is stuff available (mostly from the US sadly) just google for allergy alert baby ;)

such as http://www.mypreciouskid.com/medical-alert-bracelet.html which you should be able to secure enough to not be a choking hazard?

Have you contacted the people who do medic alert bracelets and ask what they do for babies?

Have a look at https://www.icegems.co.uk my son has a velcro one and I attach it to his clothing, you could attach it, for example, to the back of his dungarees or though a belt loop so he cannot get to it. Or to his buggy.

I had this problem with a 4 yr old in my class. The children weren't allowed to wear bracelets/necklaces.

His Mum solved the problem by going to the hospital where they gave her some wrist bands - the kind newly born babies wear and wrote 'allergic to...' where the name would normally go. Problem solved and very MSE too!
  • Just get the baby a tattoo.. problem solved!
