OH and I both have Dell laptops.

    Both extremely happy with them.

From a non techie POV you get a lot of comp for the money and will be happy to upgrade in a couple of years if the lappie doesn't last as technology will have moved on.

Have used Dell and HP laptops and both have been generally reliable (The Dell is 7 years old and still goes strong) The Dell is a BRICK!! weights a tonne so it's a stationary and was a desktop replacement when i got it. The HP is lighter and great for general day-to-day work.
Battery life is not great! that's the only downside...

My personal preference is in order:

Apple, Dell (only Studio/Latitude lines), Lenovo, Toshiba and Acer.

    I would stay away from:

    Compaq, Advent and HP.

Some people love HP laptops but I've never liked using them and I'm not a fan of their technical support.

Apart from one Desktop that failed in first few days from new, but was replaced promptly, I have never had any major problems with Dell's.

Good price and decent build quality IMO.

The best laptop or even netbook for someone would depend on his/her usage .

I only have an HP Mini 311 netbook and I only use it for occasional browsing, work and travel. It fits well for me. :)
