My DH managed to pick up an external aerial for nothing, so it's just something we are going to try. If it doesn't work then we haven't lost anything.0 -
She may not have an attenuator, but if you can get one, then it's worth trying.
An aerial splitter can be used instead, except it's not adjustable as an attenuator is.

Could drape a dead cat over the aerial but probably best to just do it properly for the sake of £5
If you are that close to the transmitter and are going to replace the aerial at least try and get a log periodic as a secondary issue you probably have ghosting from the super strong analogue channels affecting the weaker and close digitals.
If you are intent on DIY try and buy from a local installer you may get some free advise thrown in.0 -
