Cheapest way to text each other while in Spain?

Hi all, I need some help!!

We are going to Spain at the end of August and have read all of Martins article on phoning abroad etc. But I don't think it answers my question, hence I need a little more help or maybe I'm just slow:o.

I have a 02 contract phone and my wife an Orange contact phone. Whilst in Spain we will have no need to call or text home. If there is an emergency (a death etc) someone will call us and if this happens, to be honest we won't worry about a few pounds on calls.

But what want to do as cheaply as possible is text mostly, or call each other while we are in Spain, for example if I take my son to the beach and my wife is at the apartment. So they texts/calls will all internal Spanish based. What is the best way to achieve this for a low cost.

Thanks in advanced for any help offered.....:)

Why not get yourselves a couple of walkie talkies. If you are not going to be far from eachother you could probably find some that will "go the distance".

worth researching whether you can get payg sim cards from a local network. I'm a regular visitor to Cyprus and me and the mrs have a sim card each (cost £5 each at the time with some credit) and we use those. As long as we top up once a year the numbers stay live. V useful and much cheaper than using uk sims.

For many years while in Spain I have used an Orange Espana PAYT sim card in an old unlocked phone. International calls are a fraction of the price of using my UK phone, calls and texts within Spain were a few cents.

Due to anti terrorism laws that came into being in Spain this year my sim was blocked till I registered it. I needed my passport and various documents which was a pain, so the saleman recommended purchasing a new Nokia 1606 (nothing fancy but practical) and a sim card package all for Euro19. The phone is guaranteed for 2 years, unlike the UK. You only need to top up once in 12 months to keep the sim active and retain your Spanish phone number, failing that you only have to buy another sim when its needed.

I agree it's a big outlay to start but it will pay for itself.

As part of Telefonica, O2 do special deals for people using their phones in Spain. Orange also do bundles starting at a fiver for people going abroad.

At the end of the day as long as you have roaming I don't think there is a lot of expense in just sending texts normally, I have just come back form America and I probsably sent and recieved about 6 or 7 texts on my O2 contract phone and my bill was definately less than £1 more than normal. I have been in Portugal and it was something similiar although there were a couple of calls on that one as well.

As long as it is the odd quick call or text I don't think it will cost too much extra, that is my opinion from my own experience!

I've always found the cheapest way of sending a text while abroad is using a service called Fish Text.

Basically, you install this application to your phone and it uses the internet to send a text. Texts use a very small amount of internet data and for one text, your service operator will charge you 1p worth of data. Additionally, you use your Fish Text credit, which costs 2p per text to a UK phone. So...3p a text!

    Hope this helps.
