Hi
I have a Dell Dimension 3100c with Windows XP installed.
I have been using a basic Logitech optical wired mouse with it ( Logitech BT83) for the past few months without any real problems, however this evening upon restarting my computer it has stopped working.
I have opened device manager and deleted the drivers for it, then re plugged in the mouse into the USB plug but instead of letting me reinstall the driver again from new it instantly has the driver I deleted pop back up in device manager and no matter how many times I delete it, it reappears!
I really can't get round it, I have tried a number of system restores to no avail - sometimes after deleting the driver and plugging the mouse back in it will work for a few seconds then stop!
I have tried other USB sockets but all are doing the same, my keyboard is working fine and my printer.
The mouse does has the red optical light lit underneath it but doesn't dim on moving it!
Have also tried seeing if there were any drivers on Logitech's website, however due to it being a basic mouse there isn't as there shouldn't be any need for them.
I'm a little lost now as I have a lot of word processing to do and I just can't get to grips with using the number pad to move the mouse, so does anyone know how they can help me resolve this !
Thanks

try a new mouse, even if you have to borrow one for 10 mins. Always keep a spare mouse handy too even if it is a cheap one.0

Thanks Sharkie!
Can anyone advise me the cheapest place to buy a cheap basic USB optical mouse is?
Will need to be a major store as don't really want to be waiting for a few days delivery.0 -
Just brought a new mouse, USB type.
tried plugging it in, get the same problem as the old one.
I delete the HID driver in device manager, then reconnect the mouse and Windows doesn't even ask if I want it to install the software, it just does within seconds, as though the driver has not been deleted already!
Upon plugging the mouse in, while the computer installs the driver the mouse works fine but soon as the driver is installed it stops working.
Help, please as really need to use my mouse!!!!0 -
BUMP
Anyone.... Please??:o0 -
Just to add -
I have tried another mouse
Deleting the mouse driver
Rebooting the computer
Restoring it to an earlier point
All of the above have failed
Would be grateful if someone could advise and help me with sorting this problem0 -
Anyone??

Not a solution but possibly a workaround: if your PC has a PS2 port the try a mouse made for that instead, or use a PS2 to USB adaptor. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

unplug all other usb devices bar mouse - keep them unplugged!!!
I'd probably do it differently to most. I'd get either a live ubuntu cd, or Puppy Linux and boot of that. However, just because it works in linux does not mean to say that the hardware is 100% ok.
if it does not work with the bootable inux cd then looks like hardware is faulty.
If mouse works with linux cd then I'd first do virus and adware checks.
Installed any new s/w or hardware including printers recently - uninstall it
next step would be to google.
last step would be to re-install the os0 -
extra bit: after doing the virus/ad Ware CHECK
type on the RUN box type sfc /scannow you do have the original windows cd that you bought it with?

I have just booted my computer from a Ubuntu CD I have, the mouse worked fine.
What does this mean?
Sorry, I am not techie minded at all on computers regards software issues.
Regards scans, i don't have any software to scan viruses?
Also, I'm tempted to just switch to Ubuntu, one problem, I'm using a 3 Mobile Broadband dongle and it won't let me run it in Ubuntu, any ideals?0
