Confused a bit with Best Offer and Counteroffer.

If I submit counteroffer when selling with Best Offer, would I still be able to change my mind later and accept the initial offer, if within 48 h buyer would not accept counteroffer?
Would I be able to accept buyer's initial offer if buyer declines counteroffer?
I would be happier if I could sell the item for at least 2 pounds more than the the amount the buyer has offered, but in case he declines, I would not want to lose the possibility to sell it for him for his initial offer.
So how does eBay system work? Will it consider that I declined buyer's initial offer for good if I make counteroffer?
In other words how "safe" or how "risky" is making counteroffers?

If you counter offer to a buyer who has made a best offer then you wipe out that best offer.
Basically by making a counter offer you are declining the initial offer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. There isn't anything to stop the potential buyer re offering the same amount.
I believe that eBay is limiting the number of offers the same user can make (to two or three?).It is unlikely without any communication, so my best advice would be to submit counter offer and then message them and see what they say to try and keep the sale.
What I did was I sent him a message (without using eBay counteroffer system) asking whether he would be willing to pay 2 pounds more.
Guess what happened.
He retracted the offer altogether, so I lost his offer anyway, even though I have not used eBay's counteroffer system.
Perhaps I was too greedy - wanted a nice round figure, and lost the offer altogether. Bad luck.0 -
It's a !!!!!! you can't take the original offer - I had an offer for £150 for an item, pushed for £175 and didn't hear back. I would have taken the £150 after all but as was said, the new offer wiped off the original one.
I actually think very few people really see the Best Offer. I sold a couple of items with a best offer option on them, but the buyers just used buy it now. Not that I'm complaining about the extra cash, but I'd have thought they'd have tried to put in a best offer.0 -

Let's make a petition to eBay to change that.
Anyway, even though I was careful and did not use ebay counteroffer, I still lost the original offer. If buyer changes his mind it is difficult to stop him, regardless of how system works, and what you do.0 -

Some people prefer to just buy the item and not risk losing it to someone else who may make a Best Offer. I had someone offer me £80 for a £125 BIN item. I didn't respond to it as I knew it would be a popular item. Within 10 mins someone else offered £100. The first person retracted their £80 offer and just used BIN to buy it for full price :-)0 -

That might be nice for sellers but wouldn't be so great for buyers. Something could be on a BO for 30 days, who wants to make an offer and then spend a month not knowing if you'll suddenly be obliged to buy the item?
I agree. Sellers have a fixed time to accept or decline an offer..I can't see why it needs to be otherwise.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Something I would like to change with making an offer on an item -is that your offer gets picked up atraight away by the seller without coming back to you and checking that you are still in a position to make that offer
when searching larger items cars , vans , caravans , boats etc - you can realistically put in only one of these out of several hundred on offer in case 3 or 4 sellers agree to your offer and you find you are automatically in a deals with all of them at once - which suks for you as well as themAs Martin says - please be nice - there is no such thing as a stupid question !0
