To take your example of onions, I've just done a search for frozen onions on the Asda site.
Only one thing came up, a pack of diced frozen onions for £1.27. It was a 1kg pack, so £1.27 per kg
Fresh onions
Smart Price 36p per kg
Brown onions 82p per kg
Asda Onions 39.4p per kg
Loose onions 87p per kg
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the site also suggested I might like a bag of frozen carrots at £1 for a 1kg bag. When I looked for fresh carrots the best price was 50p per kg.
Cheers. I seem to learn something worthwhile everyday. :T
I know were on the subject on veg but what about fruit? I heard it is MUCH cheaper to get your five a day from frozen/tinned rather than fresh. Am I right in believing that?0 -

No idea, I don't buy tinned/frozen fruit, didn't even know you could freeze fruit.
I expect the answer will be like veg, if you buy fruit when it is in season, and at it's cheapest, it will be cheaper, but out of season tinned/frozen may be cheaper.
Not sure about getting your 5 a day from tinned fruit tho, I seem to remember it was mostly sugar!0 -

Frozen veg and fruit can be better for you as it's frozen immediately after picking so before nutrients deteriorate. You're right about tinned fruit in syrup but not in natural juice.0 -
I've had frozen bags of berries before, they were very handy for smoothies. I don't tend to buy frozen fruit often though just because with veggies you usually cook them anyway but fruit you don't (usually) cook it, so when you want it you want it, hanging around waiting for it to defrost is a bit of a faff... or I'm just impatient!0

That's what I do and it's easy enough. If you can buy it frozen in a supermarket then you can freeze it at home.
Do you do that with peas? Jeez it must take you ages to get them out of the pods. And don't get me started about sweetcorn.0 -

Actually, I don't think it takes any longer to get a pea out of a pod whether you are going to eat it of freeze it.
But to answer your question, no, I don't do it with peas. I do have Birds Eye frozen garden peas in my freezer, because I like them. But I also buy the largest tins of processed peas in the supermarket. I live on my own, so when I open the tin I eat 1/4 of the peas and put the other 3/4's in 3 little containers and freeze them for later.
I normally eat the garden peas, but when I have a pastie it's got to be tinned processed peas, so the bottom of the pastie soaks up the pea juice. And don't get me started about sweetcorn.
Why not, get a few cobs and it gives you something to do while watching corrie.0 -

:eek: Peas in a pastie?:eek: Ginsters fan by any chance?
Im glad you're not Cornish, you could get hung, drawn and quartered for suggesting such things down here :rotfl:0 -

Nope, try reading my post again, but slowly this time so you actually understand it.
What I said was I have processed peas when I have a pastie, NOT that the peas are in the pastie. The peas are on the plate next to the pastie, so the pastie soaks up the pea juice.Snakeeyes21 wrote: »:eek: Ginsters fan by any chance?

I'm glad I'm not cornish too, I hate to live in a place where the people can't understand what they read and punish people because they got the wrong end of the stick :eek:0 -
I prefer to use frozen veg as I tend to use little bits at a time and so much gets wasted of the fresh stuff... was wondering if anyone knows who does the best variety of frozen veg? As often all I see is the usual peas/broccoli/cauli which is fine but gets boring!
My first thought was Iceland but I'm not convinced they do a lot?
I'd reccommed Iceland and or Sainsbury's for frozen food. How much do we know about food and the elite http://www.vigilantcitizen.com/?p=4051
...Interesting....it's important to take the first step...action=reaction..0
