When I worked in retail, we would have a lot of people complaining that the discount wasn't being taken off the way it should be. They thought that the discount would be taken off in the order the goods went through the till, e.g. that if 3 £10 items were put through and they then put through 3 £5 items, they would get 1 of each price free but it doesn't work like that, the till will automatically take off the cheapest items, no matter how they are scanned through the till.

Personally I didn't like having to keep explaining this, (although it was clearly stated that the cheapest items would be free) so I would always advise customers, if they had items of varying prices, that they should put them through as separate transactions so they would get the best discount, not sure that head office would have approved but what the heck, happy customers come back for more!
Some stores can and do do it in the customers favour. It is all down to either moneygrabbing or incompetent computer programming, probably a combination of both ;)

When I worked in retail we used to try to put them through as seperate sales but some customers did not want to pay 2 seperate transactions on their cards.

Of course the stores can set it up in the customers favour, but it doesn't happen very often because they don't like to give too much away, and I think it's more money grabbing companys than incompetent computer programming, lol!

Myself & my workmates would always try to put things through on separate transactions but, like you, we found that the customer didn't want to do that, especially if they were paying by cheque, as it meant using more than one cheque as we couldn't take one cheque to cover separate transactions.
