Tesco clothing online - "3 for 2" warning

Your calculation is all good and well but if you read the terms you will see 'cheapest item free', so in this case 2 at £1.Tesco-shopper wrote: »I have just had a Tesco Clothing online order delivered which included a number of "3 for 2" school items and I have just emailed them to complain about how the free items are calculated.
At the risk of over-simplification (as my order was more complicated), this is the principle of how the free items were calculated:
3 items bought at £10
3 items bought at £1
By my calculation, I should get one £10 item free and one £1 item free. However, Tesco have done a different calculation and given 2 £1 items free! If I had done it as 2 separate transactions I would have got the £10 item free in one transaction and the £1 item free in the other, but by doing it as one transaction I have got less in value free ie only £2 rather than £11, so be warned in case it has happened/is going to happen to you too!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Ok, I don't think anyone really expects to buy 2 items at £1 each and then get a £10 item free. That would just be crazy. They haven't done anything wrong.
You always get the cheapest items for free.
I cannot see your complaint, as it's your fault.
But here the OP has been swindled.
Whatever is in your basket, adding three items at £1 on 3-for-2 shouldn't add more than £2 to your total.
In the OP's example without the three £1 items their total would have been £20. With the three £1 items their total was £31. So three £1 items on 3-for-2 have cost the OP £11.
That is not right, whatsoever. I would be fuming.
Contact them back, OP. Ask to speak to a manager. Tell them the example given. Ask them how much these three £1 items should add to your total.
If they say £11 then ask for it in writing and take it to the press.0 -

Best we get Trading Standards involved, call the police and let's go round their pad and kick their doors in. We should not have to put up with thesae theiving rascals0 -
A reasonable suggestion, for being charged £11 for three items marked as £1 each on 3-for-2.Freddie_Snowbits wrote: »Best we get Trading Standards involved

It's perfectly correct as others have pointed out. 3 for 2 are always cheapest item free, the OP performed a 6 for 4, with the 2 cheapest items free.
The pricing would have been clear at the checkout phase of the online purchase. I would have been tempted to return to my basket and remove the £1 items to ensure the £10 saving. I appreciate you were trying to spend more than £50 to trigger the points coupon, but the £2 could have been spent on another item.Legal team on standby0 -
Am shocked that people think that this is ok. At first I assumed that people didn't register what had happened... but you actually think it is ok to be charged £11 for three items marked at £1 each?0

No it would not be ok to be charged £11 for 3 items marked £1 each, however this was not the case here.JimmyTheWig wrote: »Am shocked that people think that this is ok. The OP was charged £10 x 3 and £1 x 3 (£33) total, and then according to the '3 for 2' offer (where CHEAPEST item is free) two items were subtracted (as she purchased 6 items in total) at £1 each, giving £33-£2=£31 total payment.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Without the three £1 items the bill is £20. With the three £1 items the bill is £31.OrkneyStar wrote: »No it would not be ok to be charged £11 for 3 items marked £1 each, however this was not the case here.

How is that any different to being charged £11 for the three £1 items?
I believe that there is a difference between "3-for-2 twice" and 6-for-4.0 -
I agree it would have made more sense for OP to buy the two lots of deals individually, as she would have saved more, but apparently there was a voucher or something she had to spend so much to get money off ?JimmyTheWig wrote: »Without the three £1 items the bill is £20. There is no reason with a computerised system that Tesco can't sort the purchases and price fairly.
After all, if they can do ( 10 - 10 - 10 - 1 - 1 - 1 ) - exclude lowest two
they can do ( 10 - 10 - 10 ) + ( 1 - 1 - 1) - exclude the lowest in each group0
