Hi all, I am having a party on Sunday 10th for my little girl who will be 5. I want to make it a little bit special for her as she has had chicken pox since wed and is going to miss her first day at school this tuesday
She is having a disco  and I need to provide food on a very tight budget. Has anyone got any ideas? Also what quantity of food should I provide
. My daughter doesnt have a very big appetite, but I know not all children of this age are the same.
Any tips/advice greatly appreciated

I have found that each time I do a party...the kids do not really eat very much at all..they are so excited about the party. On a budget you cannot go wrong with Hot dogs ...pizza ...crisps.. and jelly (without fail the jelly always goes!)I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0

Children usally like anything tiny and homemade - use little star and heart cutters to make cheesy biscuits or scones, make tiny fairy cakes and crispy cakes in sweetie papers, use your cutters to cut tiny sandwiches.
Lidls have been doing tiny ice cream cornet cups that have been lined with chocolate - I filled these with angel delight for my 3 y/o party and they went down a treat.
Hope this helps:bdaycake::snow_laug HM Christmas 2010

Here's a previous thread I think you will find useful, it's full of good ideas for kids' parties!

I must say I tend to avoid sandwiches (many kids will only pick up the other finger food like sausages, crisps, biscuits & cakes). I saw some Winnie the Pooh breadsticks on offer in Tesco yesterday, they may tempt kids more than bread. Also I swear by the little Zoo animal biscuits from Waitrose (by Leibniz - yellow packet with over 60 little non-choccy biscuits, for 59p).
Try to put out some healthy bits like pieces of cheese or small fruit pieces (raisins, chopped seedless grapes, etc., as long as they are not so big they would choke a child).
Make sure you have more drinks than you think you will need! Maybe start off only having chilled water available, before the food is out, as I find at active parties the kids can get very hot very quickly, they will use up all your squash in the first half hour otherwise!

children usually go for sweet stuff- little cakes, biscuits, jelly, ice cream, chocolate animal biscuits (cadburys), the round ones with icing on and the hole in the middle made by fox. other go for the savoury stuff- crisps etc. also try and get them to little sandwiches and fruit- hot dogs and pizza win every time. don't forgot the little party bags- try the pound shop- bubbles always win. can the children help make the stuff- cheese pasties, or biscuits. parcel the parcel is brilliant0

one other thing- don't forget the adults- they'll need something to eat too- try sandwiches, coffee and cake.0

Thank you all for the responses. I now have a few great ideas to get me started. Thank you again:T0

My Mum used to make me jelly boats.
Get some oranges cut them in half lengthwise and scoop out all the flesh, (can put this in your juicer). Fill the halves with jelly and put in the fridge to set. Once set, use a wet knife and cut each half in half lengthwise again. Add a cocktail stick with some coloured paper sails."A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain." Mark Twain0 -
We used to have jelly boats too!
Another favourite was top hats. Get those little bun cases and drop some melted chocolate in the bottom - enough to line the base. Stick a marshmallow in the chocolate, and place a small blob of chocolate on top of the marshmallow. Put a smartie on the small blob of chocolate to hold it in place, leave until set.
My mum still sends me a parcel of these on my birthday, and I'm 25 :rotfl:0 -
My sister in laws mum made a huge jelly in a goldfish bowl and put those jelly snakes in it, the kids thought it was great.0

PARTY RINGS!
I used to love those!
Adding a few suggestions, cocktail sausages, mini scotch eggs, scotch pancakes. sliced strawberries, apple slices, maybe a little fondue thing with some melted choc and things they can dip and generally make a mess with. Ice gems (another classic from my childhood) fairy cakes, cookies, could do oat and raisin ones.
Savoury stuff like pretzels, bits of cold pizza, maybe even some pasta? cucumber and carrot sticks?Wealth is not measured by currency0
