Cleaner for home...

  • Re Selclene - I pay our cleaner £20.00 for 3 hours, which is well below the rate at which you have to put them on a payroll and pay tax and NI etc.!

All I have to do each week is fill in a line on form (provided by Selclene) stating the hours worked and fee paid, and both I and the cleaner sign it. Once the whole page is full, I split the form (it's one of those 2-page duplicate thingies), and give the cleaner her copy and keep a copy myself. The cleaner is classed as self-employed, so any tax/NI etc. is her concern - although the amounts earned from this are unlikely to reach the threshold for payment of tax....

Works fine, and I can claim part of the cleaning costs back against tax myself, as I am self-employed myself and work from home.

    :D
  • I am a cleaner, i love my job, i earn £7 an hour. I work for a private house and get cash in hand, i don't earn enough to pay NI. I dont get paid holidays though, that is the only down side. If i went to an employer i would prob get more hours and also paid hols but i have worked with my present lady for over ten years and i dont just clean- i wash, iron, do beds, answer phone, etc but love it and the family.. i got the job through a friend and have never looked back it was perfect when my children were little as i used to take them with me.. you need to hire one that comes recommended and maybe one with small children who cant return to work at present they will be grateful of the work. p.s. they have to like cleaning!!

i used to do the same, and got loads of work through recommendations,im southe east and wouldnt clean a house for less than £7.00 a hour. as i worked damm hard and cleaned till it gleamed, i wouldnt go through a agency , as they charge about£10 hr and give the cleaner £5!, if you want a good cleaner pay her whats shes worth, yourl get far more out of her and more respect

tallgirl, i am not surprised your cleaner leaves a few cobwebs when she just has 1.5 - 2hrs to clean your small 4 bedroom house and do ironing too
