Hi just wanting to see if anyone had a cleaner to clean their home.
Whats the typical costs?
How did you find the cleaner and trust..?
Agency or private?
How often is ideal to clean?
We've had a new arrival and not wanting to waste our time cleaning up and wanted someone to come in do it for us instead!!
I did search here but found only one which was inconclusive!
Thanks :j

The hourly rate for cleaners is often dependent on the area in which you live and, although I haven't a cleaner, the best way to find one is through recommendations from friends.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
Although I would love a cleaner..I have always hated the idea of someone else cleaning my house ...I just know I would clean it before they came! Check out postcards in windows and ask for references.I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes

If you go with an agency the chances are the cleaner will be either Eastern European, or asian, it seems that the majority of these cleaning agencies hire ethnic staff.
I know of 3 people that has used agencies and have had polish girls work for them, they said they were excellent cleaners, but was finding it difficult to explain what they want done.
The downside of going through an agency is that the poor girl gets more or less minimum wage, while the agency makes a packet.
One of the people were twlling me they pay roughly £12 an hour to the agency, and the girl gets a fiver, once a month she gives the girl a couple of extra pounds for herself.
The average rate for a Cleaner and depending on your area can range from £6-£8 per hour if you dont go through an agency.0 -

Dont laugh! My Nan did this.
My Dad got a cleaner for a few hours a week and Nan would pop over to walk his dog while he worked. For FIVE months (yes - five) Nan would send her home early (after half hour rather than the three) and do the cleaning "properly", all the while the cleaner still got paid!
He didn't notice until Nan was ill and didn't come over for a week and the cleaning wasn't "right"!!0 -
I do have a cleaner and I pay her £20 to clean my house (small 4 bedroon) and iron our shirts etc. She has worked for us for 8 years and we could not do without her. She spends between 1.5 to 2 hours here and although she does miss cobwebs etc I really don't mind too much. She came knocking on the door looking for work as she was already cleaning a couple of houses lower down the road (people we knew). Although I do not recommend this pratice on taking people on it did work for us. Perhaps put a notice up in the newsagent or soupermarket. Many single parrents maybe looking for a bit extra money while on benefits. They can earn up to £25 a week before it affects their benefits -hope that is right.
Hope this helps.Moved to Denmark for FIRE by Aug 2025 “May your decisions reflect your hopes not your fears”

I have been using a cleaner from the 'Selclene' agency (which I think is a franchise and nationwide) for about 6 years now - no compliants at all. We have had 3 cleaners leave during this period (as they move house, or their children go to school so they can get more established jobs etc.), but when that happens Selclene just give me details of another cleaner. Only time we had a not-very-good cleaner I complained to Selclene and I had a replacement within a week. All have been local ladies, and very reliable.
It may be a bit more expensive then other methods of obtaining cleaning services, but Selclene carry full insurance in case anything gets broken etc., and the peace of mind is worth it to me.
See if they operate in your area with this link:

Re Selclene -thanks for this but it says on their website that you employ the cleaner directly. Surely this cant be right? If the cleaner is your employee you end up with all kinds of hassle like employers NI etc?0

We pay £7.50 ph. We're in the South East. Actually our cleaner has just left us and we are recruiting another - we put an ad in the paper. We've had a good response so far

Before we moved towns, we used to employ a cleaner through an agency. We paid £10 per hour, of which £3 were paid to the agency, the rest directly to the cleaner. In the end we all agreed to tell the agency to sod off and for her to continue working for us as a freelancer :P0
