Why is she poor? With middle rate dla at £70 a week plus £100 tax credits and £20 child benefit and benefit rates don't change by the day they are set amounts per week. She should get back on carers allowance and then claim income support which would be another £70 a week. Thats £260 a week, hardly nothing to live on.

With one child, her tax credits would be about £50 a week.

    (M.E. or possibly M.s) ..

Where is she in the diagnosis process and when is it likely to be confirmed? Here are some support organisations for her. She should consider if she qualifies for DLA by looking at the care and mobility criteria, get her to contact a disability rights organisation who can advise her with this.

    http://www.afme.org.uk/default.asp

    http://www.mssociety.org.uk/about_ms/first_questions/diagnosing_ms.html

Get her to put her details into the Entitled To (turn 2 us) website which will calculate the benefits for her.

    http://www.turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx

Does her ex partner pay any CSA to her? This won't affect her benefits.

What is she currently paying towards her debts each week?

Is she getting full Council Tax discount and housing benefit (local housing allowance) or does she have to top these up out of her benefits? or does she own her place instead of renting it?

She should be receiving at the very least approx £65 per week ESA, £20 child benefit, plus £47 DLA, then some tax credits, too. Depending on the level tax credits, she may be getting at least £180 per week even without carers allowance or income support so this should not be a struggle to pay household bills (hence my query about debts, topping up her rent above the LHA limit, etc).
