I make a stew out of mine with potatoes, onions, carrots, swede, leeks, sliced dark green cabbage and soup & broth mix. Plus herb dumplings if I'm feeling generous ;).

    Hi cooking-mama,

As you've decided what to do with it I've added your thread to the existing one to keep the recipes and suggestions together.

  • I usually only make pea and ham soup. I have looked on the web for ham and bean stew. All the recipes seem to cook the ham in with all the veg and beans but wont that be a bit fatty and greasy?

I love ham hocks, so cheap and tasty! :T

Hi Thunderchild - welcome to OS. Hope you stay around :D Your username makes me think of the ACDC song - any link?

I would sure give it a go if that's what the recipe suggests. I make lentil ham and carrot soup from the bone and it's never greasy :)

I do love ham hocks - it's great and the soup is so tasty. Last time my brother said it was so packed with taste he was so impressed, he has started making soup himself!

I freeze half the ham for using in HM pizzas/pasta etc. Such good value for money!

Sorry Zip its from War of the Worlds. The paddle steamer that takes down an alien ship before being blown to smithereens! My fave book and one of my fave albums.

I am just looking thru the "whats in my slow cooker today thread" Loads of ideas!

To avoid too much fat I cook mine in 2 stages. Cook the ham hock overnight in S/C. Remove the hock, allow it to cool and then separate out the meat from the bone and fat. At the same time, allow the stock to cool and the fat settles on top. Scrape off the fat and underneath you have the most delicious jelly which has all the flavour from the bone. Use the stock and meat along with beans/veg and extra water to make soup. :)
  • Hi everyone.
I am planning on making this tomorrow (with bacon hock rather than gammon as thats what I have) I have 2 large hocks, and am planning on freezing some of it for sandwiches/pastas/omelettes. What I want to know is-once I've cooked them, can I use the bone for stock or would it be a bit lacking in flavour cos there is no meat? I usually boil the bacon or ham, but want to try this and would like to save the bones for soup, but not if there is no point.....
