Verbal Warnings

I wouldn't be able to do that without getting defensive. Its made harder that the person who has caused this does a lot of things wrong but the boss ignores it.
I will be ringing him soon to talk about it more though, I really do need to.
maybe if you focus on the "how can I improve?" you can avoid being defensive, or maybe if you practice with a friend, explaining your side of things that isLindsayO

Zingy, one of the golden rules of life states that if you do not take control of a situation and let others choose our path and destiny, then (a) they may not choose the best for you, (b) the choice will usually be to their advantage (c) you may get left with the option you did not want, and it may be the worst option out of all of them.
Think you should speak to you manager. Secondly, as long as you work you allocated hours, then you are ok. Overtime is not mandatory, no matter what the manager said.
Join your union.
They cant give you a written warning with out first giving you a verbal warning. The sequence is: verbal, written1, written2, dismissal/suspension etc. However these are only for minor issues. Anything serious and it is suspension.
Have a look here (yes, it is a different hospital, but the NHS has the same basic rules country wide): http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.foisa.nhstayside.scot.nhs.uk%2FFiles%2FDocuments%2FClass_j%2FHR48-StaffDisciplinePolicy.pdf&ei=gGcuTLOgMongOJjh1MUB&usg=AFQjCNGn8ybdEgZqhO9Pxqrc5txOtRMEKQ&sig2=24BjFBkJPMJhCe7HiE3ZiA
Now you will either learn to fight, or be bullied, or bend over and take it. Once management has realised you can cause more pain for management than you are worth, they tend to leave you alone.
You also have a professional development plan that they have to adhere to, so I'd be very surprised if you are not going to uni! Also this year uni's are short of cash, so think they would even take on axe murderers.
Realize your boss has a duty to manage, you have a duty to do what ever asked - unless it is illegal, or people are put at risk, and providing it is part of you job description.
NHS=big place=strange rules and regulations=life's too short to learn them all = JOIN A UNION.
Get all confirmations and orders on email. if some one wants to do something odd and has told you this verbally, send them an email confirming what they asked you to do. Communicate with people including managers
I do like suck-up-girl. She sees a way forward, communicates with management, points out the lame duck to the hungry crocodile. If the duck is not lame, i'm sure she has ways to make it look incapacitated! Perhaps the duck already looks incapacitated or out of its depth?
Btw, if you are useless and naive, start looking for another job as you will always be the scape goat! There any only two type of animal - carnivores and lunch!0 -
Brilliant advice sharkie but i'm not with the NHS and because its such a small company, less than 15 people some of those points will be very difficult to act on.
Nothing is done by email, it is all done over the phone or in person.
I know I don't have to do overtime, i've never been forced to do it. The issue is one person lying saying I refused to do any when i did in fact do as much as i was legally allowed to do.
I didn't think they were allowed to give me a written straight away but the boss was adamant that was what I was going to have.0 -
Ok - so lets try and get things straight here.
You were given a verbal warning yesterday because of:
I don't listen to orders, refused to do any extra hours and basically won't do anything anyone else tells me to do
You don't listen to orders; what orders has the boss given you that you have not listened to?
Refused to do any extra hours; surely you either worked extra hours or not, what logging system have you got to show that you worked the extra hours?
Won't listen to anything anyone else tells you to do; in what context? If someone told you to jump off a bridge then too right you wouldn't do it; but what have you not done that someone asked you to do that the boss has issues with? What is the official line of command? Does anyone there have the authority to tell you what to do and if so, what have they told you to do that you haven't done.
You do need to sit down with your boss and work out the ins and outs here; otherwise someone else will just do this again and you will be out on your ear. You need to find out from your boss what you have actually done wrong, what you should have done, and how he is going to monitor the situation in the future; and also how you can show him that you are doing what you are doing and cut out any interference from others who seem to not have your best interests at heart.0 -
I don't know what orders they were, they couldn't tell me. The only thing i could think of is refusing to drive somewhere, but i explained my reasons for that and they seemed ok with it so it must be something else.
Only the boss is allowed to give us orders, but we are meant to listen to suggestions from others and try them out. I refuse to do these too.
None of it really makes sense.
I sent a text to the person who have made up these lies to pass it onto the boss, bad idea i know, but i had to make sure the boss got the hours in time for pay and their phone doesn't always recieve texts.0
