Window screens.

Hi All

I have a 5 month old Ragdoll kitten. I live in a flat and with him being a Ragdoll he's an indoor only cat anyways. However, in this heat its killing me not being able to open the windows up wide! I've heard of people using screens on their windows (like fly screens I guess) so they can still open the window but keep the pets inside.

Just wondered if anybody had these or knew where I can get them pretty cheap?

Thank you!

I too have a raggie, so know how you feel, although I open my windows enough to let air in, but not him out!

I have seen screens on ebay, but don't know how sturdy they are as they're designed to keep flies out, not cats in, may be worth a look

Go to the hardware store & buy a box of 1/4 in Self tapping screws & some thin chain.Remove one of the screws from the handle on the window (I take it's double glazing?) Cut the chain into 6 inch lengths.Re-attatch the screw, passing one end on the chain thru the screw.
Next useing one of the self tapping screws, attatch the other end of the chain to the windowframe.I've done this to all my windows as I'm in an upstairs flat.So much cheaper & less hassle than sorting screens for the window.
Takes about 10 minutes a window to do.

We have screens on our windows.

We live on the second floor, so don't need to worry about security.
We got them from flyscreensuk, screens aren't cheap, but we can have the windows wide open and if you have the velcro/magnetic strip combination you don't need to worry about the warranty if you have PVC windows.

i got some net and and like velcro tape from ebay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/4mgs from that seller, the velcro sticks to yours frames and the net velcros to the tape, both come off easy enough when you want to remove it, but strong enough for a cat to jump into it as mine proved when they chased a fly.
I had to get them as i lived in a 3 storey house and one of mine had already jumped out of the top window as a kitten, he didn't learn his lesson and kept trying, hence the net

Spike, I have an absolute fear of household fires! I take it you could get out in a hurry from your upstairs window if need be?
I' m one of those people who has an escape plan from various rooms onto flat rooves etc! I'll most likely ether die from a lingering illness or be knocked down by a bus, but not by fire!

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I contact flat cats as was really impressed with the price etc, but my windows are very large inward opening windows and the flat cat product isn't made to work with inward opening windows :(

Gonna have to see if I can come up with something myself using the same principle as you mentioned Bunny. This could end in some very strange looking windows! :rotfl:

And Spike, that wouldnt solve my problem at all Im afraid. My windows open in two ways, they either tilt open from the top (About the same amount you have shown in your picture) or the whole window pane opens up inwards! I have them tilted open at the top all the time as the cat cant get up there but it just doesnt let in enough air :( Plus Im in a rented property so dont think they'd be too pleased with me screwing things into their window frames! LOL! Thank you for taking the to time to suggest something thou

Just be aware that with windows that tilt inwards there have been some very nasty incidents with cats slipping down the long edge of the window and getting trapped in the narrow bit at the bottom of the tilt.

Could you not use double sided velcro on the top and long side of the frame and put a piece of double sided velcro on the inside of the window and somehow stretch the net over the gap of the open window and fix to the velcro? I can picture in my head - just not too sure how to explain.

How about a fire guard, that would block access but is mesh so would let the air through. Could you wedge one in the window?
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Question for the people who have bought screens for the windows... Our window handles poke into the room (as presumably do most people's?!) so do you have to have the screen detached slightly when the window is closed to leave space for the handles, and then reattach it to the velcro on the frame after you open the window?

Our cats are allowed outside but we don't let them out the front due to the road, so at the moment we aren't opening the downstairs front windows which means we can't really get much of a draft through to cool the house
