18 and under get free bus fares if in education
    I don't think so ...

If you live more than 3 miles from your nearest state secondary school or 2 miles from your nearest state primary school then you get free transport, but only if your parents send you to that school. And it's only for travel to and from school: out of school you pay!

But that's only until age 16 - once in 6th form you're on your own! And if too 'rich' to get EMA, you really are on your own.

    Or did I misunderstand you?

  • Students now pay an absolute fortune to study either at FE level or HE level. + Once qualified, they will be paying heavy tax bills if they get good jobs.

You say that, but did you know ne1 who was at uni under the older system. My brother is one of the ones who counts as an "old system" student. Amittedly he had to pay a lot less for his tuition fees at uni, however he did still pay the same prices for accomodation as "new system" students do (i know this as im going to the same place and paying the same price!)

Also, "new system" students get a lot more money avalible to them through loans and grants, if you add it all up my brother actually has to pay more for his time at uni as he had to get a more "normal" loan to help cover his fees - unlike the loan i get where I dont pay back untill im earning 15k. So if you think about it we have to put up more money.....but the government gives us more of it!

And just to really rub salt in the wound.....I get free bus travel as a student around Cheltenham and Gloucester (where my uni is based)

Not round here ... in fact I've just looked at the bus company's website. There's a whole student page, which doesn't have any up-to-date details on it yet. Plus the 6th form centre where he's studying isn't listed as one of the colleges where you can say you're studying - that may be an oversight, but equally it may still be seen as a school.

So I looked on their main fares page. If he buys a £10 photocard, he can then get a daily ticket for £2.80. Or a weekly one for £14. Either way, it's cheaper (and faster) to use the Park & Ride, 20 journeys for £24.

    But a 50p child fare? I wish!

  • Does anyone know if you can get free travel to university in Scotland if you have dyslexia or a hidden disability?

i hated doing a-level/btec as you get no help at all.

now i'm at uni i get loans and i can apply for loads of discounts, in fact i admit i am milking it.

when i was in my second year of doing my btec i had some trouble and dropped out. then when i tried to re-take it so i could go to uni but i had to work a certian amount of hours due to debts and other issues.
there was no financial help for me at that point. i either didnt study and just worked, which i had no choice in, or i get in deeper money troubles and study with a chance of getting out of a mess that would inevitabley get worse first.

i was refused help because i wasnt studying a HND or higher.

i was lucky that i was able to get into uni with the various half grades i had as i can only afford to study with the loans and benifits you get from being a student.

i think there should be more help for those wishing to study, and more for those who try to support themselves as it seems your penalised for working.

scrap the dole and provide smaller loans and discounts for a-level students.

Does anyone live in or around York? My daughter is at YSJ right in the middle of York but the only supermarket they have near where she lives is a very little Jacksons (Jacksons are owned by Sainsburys). Otherwise she has to get a bus from the main road up to Tesco. She is not keen on buses but if they were half price student fares I might persuade her.

Still no joy on getting her connected to the internet and I have still not convincid her about doing her shopping on line either :rotfl:

Sixth form students in London now get FREE bus and tram travel via the Transport for London 16-17 Oyster Photocard!

    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/fares-tickets/2006/photocards/under1617.asp

Partly funded by the congestion charge which works out at £40 per week if you work a 5 day week and have to travel through the soon to be extended Congestion charge Zone. Ken makes a lot more money than the funding it takes to enable 16-18 years olds in full time education to have an oyster card
