Savvy_Sue wrote:My renewed beef is why do 6th formers have to pay ADULT fares on public transport and there are very few concessions available because they're not given student discount at cinemas etc.
my sister has just strted 6th form college, she has a bus pass to pay 50p on college days and she has an nus card which she used in teh cinema, shops etc. for discounts.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0 -
I got a student discount on Trains and Buses in West Yorkshire when I was a full time undergraduate student. It was called a student metro card and cost about £45 a month which is cheaper than the full price west yorkshire bus and zone 1-5 trains pass, and if I remember correctly even cheaper than the west yorks bus pass. But yes, this £45 went up every year. I wouldn't be surprised if it's over £50 now. You have to prove your a student.
This is of course only useful, if like me, you travelled something like huddersfield to leeds and back which would otherwise have cost about £5 each day - which would cost about £100 a month if you went 5 days a week. It's also good because you can travel anywhere in West Yorks on Train or bus at any time.
Go out with mates and have a few beers, or not?! Oh damn I have to pay bus fare tomorrow.wrexhamandy wrote:Why should students get free transport? Because in terms of income and neccessary outgoings (foods, rent etc) they are on average one of the poorest classes of society and have to make daily choices between essential things for a decent quality of life, choices they shouldn't have to make.0 -

The public transport system around here is struggling to cope with the cost and usage levels of giving it free to pensioner, almost overnight the buses have become packed full with non-paying passenegers, leaving those who pay struggling to get on the buses at peak times, anymore free passenegrs and paying passenegrs wont be able to get on at all.
I agree, I think Logans's Run was the way to go. Bump them all off before they start needing free buses and pensions etc....

Oops, just realised that over 21's got bumped off, damn that won't work I'd already be dead 13 years. lol0 -
Why not just ride a bike?
It's free (apart from small cost of buying one second hand), healthy, pollution free and doesn't add to the congestion of more buses required.
I get really annoyed by the swarms of people trying to get onto the (university provided) shuttle bus between the science campus and arts area at my uni. They hang around for 10-15 minutes waiting for the bus, then spend a 8-10 minute bus journey (depending upon the traffic and lights). The walk is only 25 minutes.0 -
A good site more OAP's are on a higher income than me, I used to be a state pensions advisor and have a good grasp of what a lot of them earn, many of those compaining of low income where actually earning more in pensions than I was earning working to administer them - there are also many other people earning less than me - so as one of the poorer sectiosn of society , why cant I get it ?
Answer: Its not a vote winner to give it to meI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Sixth form students in London now get FREE bus and tram travel via the Transport for London 16-17 Oyster Photocard!

I'll tell DS to look into NUS cards through school, but there are no sensible transport discounts in this city. There IS a student bus ticket you can buy, but it still works out more expensive than the park and ride service he uses. (legitimately - his bus pass covered it last year). And the student bus ticket isn't significantly cheaper than the adult fares.Signature removed for peace of mind0

gizmoleeds.
where have you been hiding.18 and under get free bus fares if in education
there is no free education even for the poorest.they have to pay for books etc and pay back there loans. not like blair etc who had a FREE education.
also why should a multi millionaire get free travel just because they are over 60.they might eventually earn more but they also might pay higher band tax as a resultBefore you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0 -

I noticed when I went to Manchester University for a job interview there is a bus that is free from a certain point to the University for staff and students.freebie_junkie wrote:in the greater manchester area, students can get a three month £90 pass which works out at less than £1 a day, my sis has one
