Deleting CRAWLER from my computer

Kimberley
Kimberley Posts: 14,871 Forumite
My son installed a disc and usb lead he got from ebay. It was for a samsung phone usb lead. The thing is that a search engine called CRAWLER was installed and loads up when I click onto Mozilla Firefox. It is like google a search engine page. I uninstalled it from my computer and was told to restart the computer for the process to complete but it is still there. I don't want it because i don't trust it. How di i get rid of it? I looked on my programs installed in my control panel and it is not in the program list.

If you look at any thread about viruses in this forum there will be instructions about how to download, install, update and run Malwarebytes AntiMalware, which is a sovereign remedy for this sort of thing. I'm assuming you don't want to manually delete about 50 registry keys!

Two quick thoughts... Has it reset your homepage? (Click on Tools - Options) and check. Also check Tools - Add-ons and if it is in one of those you can ask Firefox to delete it.

One more thought. To prevent this from happening again in the future, remove the administrator rights from your account and/or create a separate limited user account for your son. This way he can't install new software (viruses are software too) without you knowing it. To install software you then need to login as Administrator or run the installation "as Administrator" from within your account.

It's not showing in my add ons but is showing as my start up page in the tool options.

But surely if there are 50 registry values changed, you'd still want to run malwarebytes? (instructions below by alienRIK):

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ma..._anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
