how can i tell if a clutch in the car is going

Hmm. Whilst driving at speed, say 20-30 mph, when I take my foot off the accelerator there is a whining noise, seems to be louder at higher speeds. I thought it was 'engine braking' at first but am now worried it may be the clutch. Any ideas? I drive a Celica.0

Stop on a hill facing up hill, put gear into 2nd, go as if to move off, if you go comfortably your clutch is ok. If you don't go anywhere (maybe backwards
) or it is slow to pick up, your clutch is worn.
A very worn clutch shows itself in normal driving by ever increasing accelerator pedal (revs) but no increase in speed, so you have to change down a gear.
Crunching gears means you are possibly moving your gear stick before fully depressing the clutch pedal. If they still crunch and it happens when you change down into 1st, probably a worn gear, not working properly, only way to beat it is to stop the car everytime you want 1st gear....0 -

Rear wheel drive? might be a differential whine. Start looking for a scrap yard replacement diff now, and change it when it gets louder.0 -
