Start your car (on a level road) put the clutch in, put the car into 3rd gear, take the handbrake off and slowly release the clutch. It should stall rapidly. If the engine labours for a bit as you let the clutch out, tries to pull away, then stalls, the clutch is slipping. Also, have the car ticking over in neutral, listen carefully and push the clutch in. If there is a rattle then you will have problems soon. If you have a rattle that goes away when you push the clutch in then that also points to wear in the clutch.

    Hi mollytrundle,

You should get more replies on the Motoring board, so I'll move your thread over there.

  • My car *coughed* every time I changed gear, my dad had been warning me for ages that the clutch was slipping. I took it to the garage only to be told it was just a matter of time before I would have been in deep trouble....oops!

I might pay more attention to my dad in future!!

crunching could be caused by gearbox syncros.

this is very common on all kia/hyundai models.
  • Start car. Put handbrake on (tight). Put foot on clutch and put gear lever into first gear. Slowly take your foot off the clutch. If everything is OK, the car will stall. If the car moves, your handbrake needs adjusting. If the engine keeps running, your clutch needs replacing.

Be aware that "crunching" may indicate a gearbox (or synchromesh) problem rather than a clutch problem.

You'll know when the clutch is getting worn because the bite point will happen with less pedal push, and the clutch will slip when the drive is under heavy load.

Gear crunching is more likely gear mechanism wear or misalignment or some
    times other gearbox wear.
Don't get a new clutch unless you need one.
    Happy chappy
  • My car had a new clutch earlier this year, it was making a god awful noise and the biting point was really high.

Yeah i don't entirely agree here cause i tried it and my clutch ain't bad and the car started in 3rd reasonably smoothley with not to much trouble on a slight incline, and the biting point on my clutch is pretty low. I also tried putting it 1st with the hand brake and it stalled when i let the clutch out real slow. So i dunno about this third gear start idea as a good test for a clutch.
