Depends how it's encoded, how good the headphones are, what the background noise is when you listen to it etc and the source, but for the same tracks I don't hear any difference on the iPhone and an older (5th gen) ipod

All iPods/iPhones will produce pretty much the same sound quality out of the headphone socket connected to the same gear. Unless you have an acute sense of sound I doubt you'll pick up any differences. Its always best to get a decent set of headphones as suggested as even that can make a crap device sound good at times.

Having said that I'm probably the wrong person to give out advice on sound quality. According to my wife I have a hearing problem as I'm always hearing half of what she says. ;)

  • I have an iPod touch 3g, my wife has an iPhone 3gs.

Listening WITHOUT headphones, the iPhone is much better/louder, as I think it has two external speakers, whereas the touch only has one, which is naff. I've just ordered a little travel speaker to go with my touch, as it's just not practical to listen through the inbuilt speaker.

    With headphones, no difference.
